  • In January 2004, President George W. Bush announced new elements of the national space policy by issuing the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE). The new policy set out goals for NASA, including that of exploring the “solar system and beyond” with human and robotic missions—specifically, to “extend human presence across the solar system, starting with a human return to the Moon by the year 2020.” In the year that followed, NASA created the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) as the primary agent for the development of the exploration program.

  • The applications of underwater vehicles have shown a dramatic increase in recent years, such as, mines clearing operation, feature tracking, cable or pipeline tracking and deep ocean exploration. According to different applications, the mechanical and electrical configuration and shape of an underwater vehicle are different. For instance, manipulators are necessary when doing mines clearing operation or some other tasks which need to deal with environment.

  • Humans have been exploring their world for thousands of years. People love to discover and learn about new places. Some of today's explorers are making exciting new discoveries in space. Many objects are found in the universe. These include asteroids, planets, moons, comets, and stars. Astronomers are scientists who study the objects in space. People who travel to space to learn about it are called astronauts.

  • The power rate densities based on the original FEW coefficients and the all-negative coefficients for the three full-size vehicle tests are shown in Figs. 2.30 and 2.31, respectively. Note that in Fig. 2.31, the must-activate tests, #2' and #3', are well separated from the #1 test after the introduction of the all-negative coefficients. In crash severity analyses using power rate density (prd) and FEW coefficients, it has been assumed that the FEW coefficients be given before the prd computation.

  • In recent years many successful machine learning applications have been developed, ranging from data mining programs that learn to detect fraudulent credit card transactions, to information filtering systems that learn user’s reading preferences, to autonomous vehicles that learn to drive on public highways. At the same time, machine learning techniques such as rule induction, neural networks, genetic learning, case-based reasoning, and analytic learning have been widely applied to real-world problems.

  • When seen from space, “Planet Earth” is a mix of clouds, with the majority (two thirds) of the total surface under ocean water with the remaining third of land forming what we call continents, with various degrees of increasing albedo from open water bodies, vegetation, bare soil, rocks, deserts, and snow/ice packs. In a very short time (relative to Earth's age), the modern human civilization has conquered its neighboring space with probes, satellites, and vehicles carrying humans for exploration.

  • In this book, we present the state of the art of nanotechnology research intended for applications in biomedical technologies in three subfields: nanodrugs and drug delivery inside the body; prostheses and implants; and diagnostics and screening technologies for laboratory use. For each of these three subfields, we explore the relevant developments in research. Nanoparticles such as nanotubes and quantum dots are increasingly applied as drug delivery vehicles.

  • Carsharing (or short-term auto use) provides a flexible alternative that meets diverse transportation needs across the globe, while reducing the negative impacts of private vehicle ownership. Although carsharing appeared in Europe between the 1940s and 1980s, it did not become popularized until the early 1990s. For nearly 20 years, there has been growing worldwide participation in carsharing. Today, carsharing operates in approximately 600 cities around the world, in 18 nations, and on four continents. Malaysia is operating a carsharing pilot, with a planned launch in late-2006.

  • We are privileged to be living in one of the greatest eras of exploration that humankind has ever undertaken. Our current Age of Space grew out of the dark struggles of World War II when large rockets were developed as agents of mass murder. The subsequent Cold War rivalry between the United States and Soviet Union pushed rocket capabilities to the point that it became possible to send vehicles into Earth orbit and beyond (even though the stated aim was to send missiles carrying nuclear weapons over mere continental distances). The Russians put the first human into Earth orbit.
