  • More recently, a QSAR (Quantitative Structure Activity Relantionship) investigation was carried out on a series of nostoclide analogues presenting the general structure (43) to correlate molecular descriptions with their in vitro biological activity (the ability to interfere with ligh-driven reduction of ferrycianide by isolated spinach chloroplasts thylakoid membranes). The results of this investigation suggested that the degree of inhibition efficiency of this class of compounds is intimately associated with their polarity (Teixeira et al, 2009).

  • The ACS SYMPOSIUM SERIES was founded in 1974 to provide a medium for publishing symposia quickly in book form. The format of the SERIES parallels that of its predecessor, ADVANCES IN CHEMISTRY SERIES, except that in order to save time the papers are not typeset but are reproduced as they are sub- mitted by the authors in camera-ready form. As a further means of saving time, the papers are not edited or reviewed except by the symposium chairman, who becomes editor of the book.

  • Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a steroid hormone, modified the proli-feration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in a dose-dependent manner. Its inactive sulfate ester (DHEA-S) and two of its metabolites – estradiol and testosterone – had no inhibitory effect at physiological concentrations. Antiproliferation was associated with arrest in the G1 phase of the cell cycle, but not with cell death, as evaluated by cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase and exposure of phosphatidylserine. ...

  • Autophagy and apoptosis have been known to be interconnected positively or negatively; however, the molecular mechanisms mediating these two cel-lular processes are not fully understood. In the present study, we demon-strated that the exposure of L929 cells to oridonin led to intracellular reactive oxygen species generation, followed by lipid peroxidation, as well as decreases in superoxide dismutase and glutathione activities.

  • Exposure of blood to tissue factor (TF) rapidly initiates the coagulation serine protease cascades. TF is expressed by macrophages and other types of cell within atherosclerotic lesions and plays an important role in throm-bus formation after plaque rupture. Macrophage TF expression is induced by pro-inflammatory stimuli including lipopolysaccharide (LPS), inter-leukin-1band tumor necrosis factor-a. Here we demonstrate that activation of liver X receptors (LXRs) LXRaand LXRbsuppresses TF expression....

  • Human spermatozoa at ejaculation are incapable of in vivo fertilization and must undergo maturational change during which they acquire the ability to fertilize oocytes. This process, known as capacitation, was described more than 50 year ago by both Austin (1) and Chang (2). Capacitation is prevented in ejaculated spermatozoa by at least one factor in seminal plasma (3). Additionally, prolonged exposure to seminal plasma can inhibit the ability of spermatozoa to undergo the acrosome reaction in vitro (4) and diminish their capacity to fertilize (5).

  • Immunologic Effects Exposure to solar radiation causes local (inhibition of immune responses to antigens applied at the irradiated site) and systemic (inhibition of immune responses to antigens applied at remote unirradiated sites) immunosuppression. The action spectrum for UV-induced immunosuppression closely mimics the absorption spectrum of DNA. Pyrimidine dimers in LCs may inhibit antigen presentation. The absorption spectrum of epidermal urocanic acid closely mimics the action spectrum for UV-B-induced immunosuppression.

  • Coagulation is initiated by tissue factor (TF) exposure, which, with factor (F)VIIa, activates FIX and FX, which in turn, with FVIII and FV as cofactors, respectively, results in thrombin formation and subsequent conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. Thrombin activates FXI, FVIII, and FV, amplifying the coagulation signal. Once the TF/FVIIa/FXa complex is formed, tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) inhibits the TF/FVIIa pathway, making coagulation dependent on the amplification loop through FIX/FVIII.
