  • Learning how to compose an effective extended text, therefore, should be conceived as a task similar to acquiring expertise in related culturally acquired domains. It is not merely an extension of our apparent biological predisposition to acquire spoken language. Rather, it is more similar to learning how to type - which is in fact one aspect of composition, as a common means of motor output. Or, it is similar to learning how to play chess - which is another planning intensive task similar to composition in its demands on thinking and memory. Or, it is similar to learning...

  • Consumer and business customers today seek wireless service that is readily accessible, benefit rich, secure and affordable. Voice, data and video services, Internet games, and mobile office access must all be provided to meet growing demand from customers. Rollout of third-generation networks has made real-time information flow of news, music, sports updates, browsing and image sharing a reality that is driving growth and change in the network. The move toward faster service will continue without end and requires that both bandwidth and network locations be increased.

  • There are two papillary muscles associated with the mitral valve (Fig. 3) When looking from the atrial side, the anterolateral is to the left and the posteromedial is to the right. The muscles are located under their respective commissures. They originate from the lower third of the left ventricular free wall. The papillary muscles are extensions of the ventricular muscle from which they originate. The chords originate from the fibrous tips of these muscles, extending to insert on the mitral leaflets.

  • The model presented is also related to the literature in limited risk sharing and participation constraints (Kehoe and Levine (1993), Kocherlakota (1996) and Zhang (1997)). More recently, Alvarez and Jermann (2000, 2001) showed that these participation constraints can be modelled as endogenous portfolio constraints, which they denote solvency constraints. Besides extending this strand of the literature for the case of heterogeneous beliefs, I solve this problem in continuous time for the …rst time, thus generalizing it to the case of in…nite possible states.

  • Scoring Extended- and Short-Response Items Extended- and short-response items are evaluated according to an established scoring scale, called a rubric, developed from a combination of expectations and a sample of actual student responses. Such rubrics must be particularized by expected work and further developed by examples of student work in developing a guide for scorers. Illinois educators play a substantial role in developing these guides used for the scoring of the short- and extended-response items.

  • Integrating statistics and dynamics within a single volume, the book will support the study of engineering mechanics throughout an undergraduate course. The theory of two- and three-dimensional dynamics of particles and rigid bodies, leading to Euler's equations, is developed. The vibration of one- and two-degree-of-freedom systems and an introduction to automatic control, now including frequency response methods, are covered.

  • For the process of a credit-financed investment expansion described above, the financial sector is of crucial importance. The Keynesian-Schumpeterian investment-saving nexus can only work if the financial sector is able and willing to extend credit to companies which wish to expand production and investment. In order for the process to work, different levels of the financial sector thus have to interact smoothly and fulfil certain tasks.

  • Classifying travel behavior and segmentation becomes increasingly more difficult as modern travelers combine pleasure with business, in order to take time and cost advantage. There are therefore endless variations between the two principle classifications of travel activities, i.e. business and leisure trips. However, leisure trips may include elements, characteristics and motivations of business travel and vice versa. Incentive travelling, extended conference stays and business meetings during leisure travel makes the distinction between the two categories increasingly blurred.

  • Institutional investors are, by some margin, the most important category of investor to quoted companies owing to the sheer weight of assets that they manage and the degree to which they can invest. It is widely acknowledged that institutional investors own the vast majority of the UK equity market. In some cases, institutional investors may also own nearly all of a company’s issued share capital.

  • Unfortunately, unanimity is not always feasible. There are some respects in which conformity appears unavoidable, so I do not see how one can avoid the use of the political mechanism altogether. But the doctrine of "social responsibility" taken seriously would extend the scope of the political mechanism to every human activity. It does not differ in philosophy from the most explicitly collective doctrine. It differs only by professing to believe that collectivist ends can be attained without collectivist means.

A formal mission statement or charter lays out the function’s goals and provides the basis to evaluate internal audit performance. An effective mission statement delineates the function’s authority and responsibilities and reflects the priorities of senior management and the audit committee.

  • The Key Cases series is designed to give a clear understanding of important cases. This is useful when studying a new topic and invaluable as a revision aid. Each case is broken down into fact and law. In addition many cases are extended by the use of important extracts from the judgment or by comment or by highlighting problems. In some instances students are reminded that there is a link to other cases or material. If the link case is in another part of the same Key Cases book, the reference will be clearly shown. Some links will be to additional cases or materials that do not feature in...

  • Extended-response items require students to consider a situation that demands more than a numerical response. These items require students to model, as much as possible, real problem solving in a large- scale assessment context. When an extended-response item poses a problem to solve, the student must determine what is required to “solve” the problem, choose a plan, carry out the plan, and interpret the solution in terms of the original situation. Students are expected to clearly communicate their decision- making processes in the context of the task proposed by the item (e.g.
