Extending metrics

This brief paper, which is itself an extended abstract for a forthcoming paper, describes a metric that can be easily computed during either b o t t o m u p or topdown construction of a parse tree for ranking the desirability of alternative parses. In its simplest form, the metric tends to p r e f e r trees in which constituents are pushed as far down a s possible, but by appropriate modification of a c o n s t a n t in the formula other behavior can be obtained also. This paper includes an...

In 1999, I packed everything I owned into my car for a crosscountry trip to begin my new job as Staff Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley Computer Science Department. It was an optimistic time in my life and the country in general. The economy was well into the dotcom boom and still a few years away from the dotcom bust. Private investors were still happily throwing money at any company whose name started with an “e” and ended with “.com”.

In this paper we describe the propagation of C ∞ and Sobolev singularities for the wave equation on C ∞ manifolds with corners M equipped with a Rie2 1 mannian metric g. That is, for X = M × Rt , P = Dt − ∆M , and u ∈ Hloc (X) solving P u = 0 with homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, we show that WFb (u) is a union of maximally extended generalized broken bicharacteristics. This result is a C ∞ counterpart of Lebeau’s results for the propagation of analytic singularities on real analytic manifolds with...

This paper considers a trapped characteristic initial value problem for the spherically symmetric EinsteinMaxwellscalar field equations. For an open set of initial data whose closure contains in particular ReissnerNordstr¨m data, o the future boundary of the maximal domain of development is found to be a lightlike surface along which the curvature blows up, and yet the metric can be continuously extended beyond it. This result is related to the strong cosmic censorship conjecture of Roger Penrose. ...

There are many phenomenologicalmodels of inflation in the literature, which usually employ some new fields and new interactions. It is, therefore, quite reasonable and meaningful to search for the minimal inflationary model building, by getting most economical and viable inflationary scenario. I amgoing to use the one proposed the long time ago by Starobinsky (20; 21), which does not use new fields (beyond a spacetime metric) and exploits only gravitational interactions. I also assume that the general coordinate invariance in spacetime is fundamental, and it should not be sacrificed.

A serious bottleneck of comparative parser evaluation is the fact that different parsers subscribe to different formal frameworks and theoretical assumptions. Converting outputs from one framework to another is less than optimal as it easily introduces noise into the process. Here we present a principled protocol for evaluating parsing results across frameworks based on function trees, tree generalization and edit distance metrics. This extends a previously proposed framework for crosstheory evaluation and allows us to compare a wider class of parsers. ...

Research objective: The thesis is devoted to extend some results on the existence of fixed points in metric spaces to spaces with uniform structure. We also considered the existence of solutions of some classes of integral equations with unbounded deviation, which we can not apply fixed point theorems in metric spaces. The thesis can be a reference for under graduated students, master students and Ph.D students in analysis major in general, and the fixed point theory and applications in particular.
