  • Until recently the applications of modern algebra were mainly confined to other branches of mathematics. However, the importance of modern algebra and dis- crete structures to many areas of science and technology is now growing rapidly. It is being used extensively in computing science, physics, chemistry, and data communication as well as in new areas of mathematics such as combinatorics. We believe that the fundamentals of these applications can now be taught at the junior level.

  • The foundations of this book lie in the highly successful text Principles of Measurement and Instrumentation by the same author. The first edition of this was published in 1988, and a second, revised and extended edition appeared in 1993. Since that time, a number of new developments have occurred in the field of measurement. In particular, there have been significant advances in smart sensors, intelligent instruments, microsensors, digital signal processing, digital recorders, digital fieldbuses and new methods of signal transmission.

  • THE recent development of various methods of modulation such as PCM and PPM which exchange bandwidth for signal-to-noise ratio has intensified the interest in a general theory of communication. A basis for such a theory is contained in the important papers of Nyquist1 and Hartley2 on this subject. In the present paper we will extend the theory to include a number of new factors, in particular the effect of noise in the channel, and the savings possible due to the statistical structure of the original message and due to the nature of the final destination of the information....

  • The new edition of Principles of Electrochemistry has been considerably extended by a number of new sections, particularly dealing with 'electrochemical material science' (ion and electron conducting polymers, chemically modified electrodes), photoelectrochemistry, stochastic processes, new aspects of ion transfer across biological membranes, biosensors, etc. In view of this extension of the book we asked Dr Ladislav Kavan (the author of the section on non-electrochemical methods in the first edition) to contribute as a co-author discussing many of these topics.

  • This sentiment was well expressed by Charcot in one of his many teaching sessions on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It holds as true today as it did in 1865 and the search must continue but progress has been incredible in recent years. There has been an exponential increase in the number of publications dealing with ALS and motor neuron diseases in the last 50 years, as evidenced by listings in PubMed and related data bases. The Editors extend their utmost thanks to the internationally renowned experts that have contributed to this volume.

  • An additional RCT was identified and included which compared metformin immediate-release (MIR) with metformin extended-release (MXR).65 The GDG subsequently felt that there might be relevant and important information in existence on the AE profile of these two formulations which had not been found during our search. Thus a focused call for evidence to all stakeholders was made. Following this, the GDG considered two RCTs (published in the same paper) which compared MXR against placebo,66 and to a retrospective chart review comparing immediaterelease and extended-release formulations.

  • FUZZY DESCRIPTOR SYSTEMS AND CONTROL This chapter deals with a fuzzy descriptor system defined by extending the original Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. A number of stability conditions for the fuzzy descriptor system are derived and represented in terms of LMIs. A motivating example for using the fuzzy descriptor system instead of the original Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model is presented. An LMI-based design approach is employed to find stabilizing feedback gains and a common Lyapunov function.

This is a broad definition, and it encompass a large number of protocols not designed for machine-to-human communication, but for machine-to-machine communication such as XML, JSON, RSS, etc. web2py provides, out of the box, support for the many protocols, including XML, JSON, RSS, CSV, XMLRPC, JSONRPC, AMFRPC. web2py can also be extended to support additional protocols.

  • First, there are a number of challenges for the first step of the credit creation, the decision of the lower tier of the financial system to extend credit to some enterprise which wants to conduct some investment project. The first problem is that a number of entrepreneurs and firms which in principle could conduct some profitable investment project have no or very constrained access to formal credit. There are a number of reasons for this phenomenon. First, in developing countries, the informal sector usually is of a larger relative size than in developed countries.
