  • The federal funds market also functions as the core of a more extensive overnight market for credit free of reserve requirements and interest rate controls. Nonbank depositors supply funds to the overnight market through repurchase agreements (RPs) with their banks. Under an overnight repurchase agreement, a depositor lends funds to a bank by purchasing a security, which the bank repurchases the next day at a price agreed to in advance. In 1991, overnight RPs accounted for about 25 percent of overnight borrowings by large commercial banks.

  • The traditional direct marketing paradigm implicitly assumes that there is no possibility of a customer purchasing the product unless he receives the direct promotion. In real business environments, however, there are “voluntary buyers” who will make the purchase even without marketing contact. While no direct promotion is needed for voluntary buyers, the traditional response-driven paradigm tends to target such customers. In this thesis, the traditional paradigm is examined in detail. We argue that it cannot maximize the net profit.

  • I will never forget the day my family got cut off from the Internet. I was hiding in my room as I usually did after school let out, holed up with a laptop I'd bought third-hand and that I nursed to health with parts from here and there and a lot of cursing and sweat. But that day, my little lappie was humming along, and I was humming with it, because I was about to take away Scot Colford's virginity. You know Scot Colford, of course. They've been watching him on telly and at the cinema since my mum was a girl, and he'd been dead...

  • Over the past few decades, research in …nancial economics has taken a high e¤ort to increase the understanding of the volatility patterns of stock market returns. Indeed, good knowledge of return volatility is crucial for portfolio choice, risk management and derivatives asset pricing. Perhaps the most robust empirical regularity of stock return volatility is volatility clustering. As …rst noted by Mandelbrot (1963) when referring to stock market returns, "large changes tend to be followed by large changes, of either sign, and small changes tend to be followed by small changes".

  • These relationships are shown in three figures. Figure 2 shows that it is operating costs, rather than capital costs or loan loss provisions, that that drive the differences in total costs between different kinds of microfinance institutions. Figure 3 shows that the institutions that make the smallest loans on average are also the institutions that face the highest costs per unit lent (a result that holds up in regressions after controlling for institutions’ age, inflation, country- level governance, GDP growth, region, and lending method).

Make sure you count creditors, that is items delivered to you but which you had not paid for at the end of the period. Do not count items you paid for in this period if they were included as creditors in your last accounts. You should include the value of stock you had on hand and uncompleted work in progress at the start of the period (this must be the closing figure which you used in your last accounts), but exclude the value of stock and work in progress...

  • Daniel Boone, exploring the wild Kentucky landscape, was too uneducated to see much of what was there, supposes Aldo Leopold. 'Daniel Boone's reaction depended not only on the quality of what he saw, but on the quality of the mental eye with which he saw it. Ecological science has wrought a change in our mental eye. . . . We may safely say that, as compared with the competent ecologist of the present day, Boone saw only the surface of things. The incredible intricacies of the plant and animal community . . . were as invisible to Daniel Boone as...

  • There has been a growing realization in national governments and multilateral institutions that it is impossible to separate economic development issues from environment issues; many forms of development erode the environmental resources upon which they must be based, and environmental degradation can undermine economic development. Poverty is a major cause and effect of global environmental problems. It is therefore futile to attempt to deal with environmental problems without a broader perspective that encompasses the factors underlying world poverty and international inequality....
