The analysis of reading times can provide insights into the processes that underlie language comprehension, with longer reading times indicating greater cognitive load. There is evidence that the language processor is highly predictive, such that prior context allows upcoming linguistic material to be anticipated. Previous work has investigated the contributions of semantic and syntactic contexts in isolation, essentially treating them as independent factors.
A Structural Equation Model was developed and tested in this paper for identifying the determinants that influence customers’ trust and loyalty to I-Banking in New Zealand. The results indicated that shared value was the most critical factor impacting customers’ trust in I-Banking, compared with two other important factors; communication and opportunistic behaviour control.
Learning objectives of this chapter include: Distinguish between detention, arrest, and charging; explain the benefit of a police officer=s making an arrest under the authority of a warrant; define and describe probable cause; discuss the risk factors involved in making a premature arrest; briefly outline the steps in a trial process; assess the importance of a criminal investigator’s knowing the rules of evidence;…
Since 1897 instruction has been given at the University of Minnesota, College of Agriculture, on human foods
and their nutritive value. With the development of the work, need has been felt for a text-book presenting in
concise form the composition and physical properties of foods, and discussing some of the main factors which
affect their nutritive value. To meet the need, this book has been prepared, primarily for the author's
classroom. It aims to present some of the principles of human nutrition along with a study of the more
common articles of food.
This edition of theHandbook of Counseling Psychologylik,e all three prior editions, has three primary
objectives: (1) to provide a scholarly review of important areas of counseling psychology inquiry, (2) to
elaborate directions for future research, and (3) to draw specific suggestions for practice that derive from
the scholarly literature in counseling psychology and related disciplines.
Nucleate pool boiling is a daily phenomenon transferring effectively high heat flux. It is,
however, a very complex and illusive process because of the interrelation of numerous
factors and effects as the nucleate process, the growth of the bubbles, the interaction
between the heater’s surface with liquid and vapor, the evaporation process at the liquidvapor
interface, and the transport process of vapour and hot liquid away from the heater’s
It is our everyday experience that materials in the solid, liquid, and gas phases
are equally present in the world around us.1 Nevertheless it is the physics
of solids that has acquired a privileged status in the vast field of research
into the physical properties of macroscopic bodies. The reason for this is
that while investigating liquids and real gases, let alone materials in so-called
mesomorphic phases can yield a lot of new and interesting results, it is the
processes taking place in solids that have, in the first place, led to a great
many fundamentally new concepts.
The historical background of probiotics can be traced back to when the first definition
of probiotic bacteria was given by Russian scientist Elie Metchnikoff who stated that
probiotics are considered to exert a beneficial effect on the host. This was confirmed
later on by an official statement by FAO/WHO. In their reviews, two group of
investigators Matur et al. and Boaventura et al., presented the impact of probiotics on
the physiology of the GIT and the underlying mechanism of action of this microflora
and the benefits derived with the use of probiotics in human and animal nutrition.
The hippocampus and cerebral cortex are areas associated with
seizure initiation and propagation. It is therefore discussed how pathological disturbances
in the local estrogen production after menopause may contribute to an increase in seizures
in some women (Veliskova, 2007).
Estrone is the primary estrogen after menopause, and its main source is subcutaneous fat.
This might be of importance for overweight women with epilepsy. Little is known on the
influence of estrone on epilepsy.
X-ray diffraction is a tool for the investigation of the fine structure of
matter. This technique had its beginnings in von Laue's discovery in 1912
that crystals diffract x-rays, the manner of the diffraction revealing the
structure of the crystal. At first, x-ray diffraction was used only for the
determination of crystal structure.
Hence, there is an imperative need to re-engineer Pakistan’s dairy industry; both at farm and processor
level. This paper seeks to investigate the tools that could bring about such change. We believe achieving
the strategic change outlined in this paper for the dairy industry may prove challenging for at least some
The human genome is largely made of complex sequences evolved over time due to
replication, mutations and insertion of foreign DNA. Based on the nucleotide distribution and
functional significance, the genome has been categorized into different block of sequences,
namely genes or coding and non-coding regions. A special type of sequence located near
genes, in relation to spread of DNA methylation and dinucleotide frequencies are the
The role of the placental bed in normal pregnancy and
its complications has been intensively investigated for
50 years, following the introduction of a technique for
placental bed biopsy. It is now recognized that disorders
of the maternal–fetal interface in humans have
been implicated in a broad range of pathological conditions,
including spontaneous abortion, preterm
labor, preterm premature rupture of membranes, preeclampsia,
intrauterine growth restriction, abruptio
placentae, and fetal death.
For example, take the claim that many poor households will pay high interest rates
without flinching, and the related claim that the existence of moneylenders implies the
insensitivity of most borrowers to interest rates. Moneylender loans are often taken for short
periods of less than a month, however, and are often used as a short-term patch to meet pressing
consumption needs--while microfinance loans are typically held for several months at minimum
and are targeted at business investment. The standard Grameen Bank loan, for example, had a
All Americans have a stake in effective response to hate
crimes. These crimes demand priority attention because
of their special impact. Bias crimes are designed to
intimidate the victim and members of the victim’s
community, leaving them feeling isolated, vulnerable,
and unprotected by the law. Failure to address this
unique type of crime could cause an isolated incident to
explode into widespread community tension. The
damage done by hate crimes, therefore, cannot be
measured solely in terms of physical injury or dollars and
The research detailed in this paper is used to question the utility of investigating the
consumption of counterfeiting not through the lens of subcultures, ethics or legality,
but as a more routine and situated practice. As such it draws upon broad survey data
of consumers and non-consumers of counterfeit and pirated goods. It also details a
range of consumer and leisure items to address the limitations of previous empirical
research based upon smaller or more homogenous consumer samples (e.g., Albers-
Miller, 1999) or products (e.g., Ang et al., 2001).
In some ways, the uncertainty over supply consistency is really a form of risk
management. In the future, both petrochemical supply and renewable supply
will carry increased risk. For petrochemicals, further supply uncertainty may
arise from political changes in other world areas. For plant-derived materials,
weather may be an uncertain factor locally, while specialty plants with less
commodity type production may result in more trading uncertainty.
While various glomerular disorders account for the most cases of end stage renal
failure, the etio-pathogenesis of these conditions intrigued many investigators for
decades. A clear knowledge of the etiology and pathogenesis is crucial for developing
novel strategies to prevent and to treat these disorders. Notwithstanding the
continuous emergence of new discoveries, we still have a long way to get any closer to
a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of glomerular injury.
