  • This is a very personal book. It has grown out of my years observing, advising and learning lessons from some of the world’s most successful family-owned businesses and business-owning families. Also, the book in a sense records my personal journey through a period of remarkable change, beginning in an era (the late 1970s) when family companies were largely seen as quaint anachronisms of bygone times, and misunderstood as inefficient drags on entrepreneurialism by dint of their under-investment and parochial management style.

  • A vast literature focuses on the predictability of U.S. and international stock returns using macroe- conomic variables, such as the short government interest rate or the yield spread between defaultable and government bonds. For instance, Ferson and Harvey (1993) nd that returns on international stock indexes are predictable using macroeconomic indicators as conditioning variables. More strikingly, Ferson and Harvey (1999) nd that broad economic variables explain the cross-sectional variation in U.S. individual stock returns better than the Fama and French (1993) empirical factors.

  • In Afghanistan, the role of women and their position in the society are inextricably interlinked with the national destiny. Women are symbols of family honor but also carry the burden of embodying the national honor and aspirations of the country. Gender has thus been one of the most politicized issues in Afghanistan over the past 100 years, where many reform attempts rightly or wrongly have been condemned by opponents as un- Islamic and a challenge to the sanctity of the faith and family.

  • There is huge uncertainty about future budget deficits and their financing. Economists disagree about how quickly deficits should be reduced: some would stress deflation risks and others inflation risks. Even if economists were to agree, there would still be great uncertainty about political choices on macroeconomic policy. It is nevertheless certain that government debt/GDP ratios in major countries will continue to rise over the next few years. Even the optimistic G20 pronouncements do not envisage debt/GDP ratios in the advanced countries stabilising before 2016.

But the health of women and adolescent girls is intimately linked to the health of their own children and future generations. • Both Planned Parenthood and the alternative sites we interviewed typically had relationships with other local health care providers. Thus, changes that affect one set of clinics, like Planned Parenthood, may have repercussions for other providers in the communities. Clinics often refer patients for care at other facilities if they cannot provide the services themselves. For example, if a woman is diagnosed with diabetes in a WHP exam at a family planning clinic, she would be referred to a community health center or public primary care clinic for further follow- up and care.

  • This positive sentiment extended to non-euro area banks, with UK banks experiencing positive inflows of €13.3 billion compared to inflows of €9 billion for euro area banks. The higher figure for the UK may be partially accounted for by rebalancing from sovereign to corporate bonds as UK government bonds experienced an outflow of €3.7 billion, to close at €50.1 billion, alongside upward revaluations of €0.7 billion. UK banks’ participation in ECB operations, through their subsidiaries and branches, is also likely to have contributed to investor confidence. ...

  • The actual discrimination in the market place against a minority group depends on the combined discrimination of employers, workers, consum- ers, schools, and governments. The analysis shows that sometimes the environment greatly softens, while at other times it magnifies, the impact of a given amount of prejudice. For example, the discrepancy in wages be- tween equally productive blacks and whites, or women and men, would be much smaller than the degree of prejudice against blacks and women when many companies can efficiently specialize in employing mainly blacks or women....
