  • ALTRUISM AND THE FAMILY FIRM : SOME THEORY Columns E and F explore the impact of varying the sample definition. In Column E, the basic model is estimated on public schools only, while in Column F the 18 MSAs that have only a single district are excluded. The choice-peer group interaction coefficient is again negative in each of these specifications, significantly so (and with a substantially larger point estimate than in the basic specifications) in the latter case.

  • In this work I address the challenge of augmenting n-gram language models according to prior linguistic intuitions. I argue that the family of hierarchical Pitman-Yor language models is an attractive vehicle through which to address the problem, and demonstrate the approach by proposing a model for German compounds. In an empirical evaluation, the model outperforms the Kneser-Ney model in terms of perplexity, and achieves preliminary improvements in English-German translation.

  • This paper introduces new methods based on exponential families for modeling the correlations between words in text and speech. While previous work assumed the effects of word co-occurrence statistics to be constant over a window of several hundred words, we show that their influence is nonstationary on a much smaller time scale.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework to explain and describe the daily cash flow management processes of families. From data gathered through semi-structured interviews, themes are developed and linked into a daily cash flow management framework. The proposed model suggests that families have a process for managing money. The process focuses on short-term viability through safety, control, comfort, and routine aspects. Cash flow activities are motivated by the near future, feelings and values, experience, and situational knowledge.

  • For the most part modern theories of economic growth assume population change to be a determining factor of human welfare. A central tenet of the dominant theory is that although population growth doesn’t affect the long-run rate of change in living standards in any way, it affects the long-run standard of living adversely (Solow, 1956). Recent models of economic growth have been more assertive. They lay stress on new ideas as a source of progress.

  • Filled pauses are characteristic of spontaneous speech and can present considerable problems for speech recognition by being often recognized as short words. An um can be recognized as thumb or arm if the recognizer's language model does not adequately represent FP's. Recognition of quasi-spontaneous speech (medical dictation) is subject to this problem as well.

  • We describe experiments with a Naive Bayes text classifier in the context of anti- spam E-mail filtering, using two different statistical event models: a multi-variate Bernoulli model and a multinomial model. We introduce a family of feature ranking functions for feature selection in the multinomial event model that take account of the word frequency information. We present evaluation results on two publicly available corpora of legitimate and spam E-mails.

  • The high costs of fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have rekindled congressional interest in the concept of the sale of a Treasury security to help finance these war costs. In the 111th Congress, three bills have been introduced that would permit the issuance of a war bond: S. 2846, H.R. 4315, and H.R. 4385. Although these bills are silent on any relationship between the proposed “war bonds” and World War II-era war bonds, the question has been raised whether or not the issuance of war bonds during the Second World War serves as a good model for a new “war bond.

  • This paper demonstrates that the use of ensemble methods and carefully calibrating the decision threshold can significantly improve the performance of machine learning methods for morphological word decomposition. We employ two algorithms which come from a family of generative probabilistic models. The models consider segment boundaries as hidden variables and include probabilities for letter transitions within segments. The advantage of this model family is that it can learn from small datasets and easily generalises to larger datasets. ...

  • More recent studies using molecular methods and a retrievable enamel chip model have revealed a new line-up of initial colonizers though the early dental plaque microflora varies at subject-specific basis (Diaz et al., 2006; Kolenbrander et al., 2005). In initial plaque on the chip at four to eight hours, Streptococcus spp. was dominant while Veillonella, Gemella, Prevotella, Niesseria, Actinomyces and Rothia were also frequently found. Among streptococci, S. oralis, S. mitis, S. infantis, S. sanguinis, S. parasanguinis, S. gordonii, S. cristatus and S.

  • Stable laws { also called -stable or Levy-stable { are a rich family of probability distributions that allow skewness and heavy tails and have many interesting mathematical properties. They appear in the context of the Generalized Central Limit Theorem which states that the only possible non-trivial limit of normalized sums of independent identically distributed variables is -stable. The Standard Central Limit Theorem states that the limit of normalized sums of independent identically distributed terms with nite variance is Gaussian ( -stable with = 2).

  • The theory of switched systems concerns hybrid dynamical systems composed of a family of continuous–time subsystems and a switching law, orchestrating switching between these subsystems. Systems of this class have been identified in many natural and man– made systems, and are recently widely studied by control theorists, computer scientists, practicing engineers and others.

  • Prison policies often overlook the special needs of women and their health. Many women in prison have high levels of mental illness and drug or alcohol dependence as well as histories of sexual and physical abuse and violence. Issues arising from gender-specific health care needs and family responsibilities are also frequently neglected. Although women represent a small percentage of the total prison population, their numbers are increasing and the rate of increase is much greater than that of men. ...

  • In recent years, there has been growing interest in emotion regulation processes within different areas of psychology. This interest has been sparked both by the development of new theoretical models of emotion regulation processes and by the growing realization that poor or inappropriate regula- tion of emotions often constitutes a core component of common individual and interpersonal problems.

  • I often ask myself, “Why do I do this? Why am I writing another edition of this book? Is it worth it? Isn’t there anything else that I could be doing that would be more beneficial to me, my family, or the human race? Well, of course there is. The fact is, however, I generally love relational databases, I love to write, and I want to help other people get better at what they do. When I was first getting started designing databases, I learned from a few great mentors, but as I wanted to progress, I started looking for material on database design, and...

  • Similar MHC class II polymorphisms and T cell dysfunc- tions have been implicated in lupus,[127,128] and lower levels of free tryptophan[129] and MHC II protein over expression is also linked to autoimmune attack on beta cells in Type I diabetes (IDDM) [130]. Over expression of the MHC II following failure to select against self-reactive T-cells is also a useful model for rheumatoid arthritis, Graves disease, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, in which T- cells react to proteins produced in the body, failing to dis- criminate them from invading organisms [131].
