On February 28, 2003, the President issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5 (HSPD–5), “Management of Domestic Incidents,” which directed the Secretary of Homeland Security to develop and administer a National Incident Management System (NIMS). This system provides a consistent...
In fiscal year 2001, Congress allocated funds for NIOSH to establish a new program for personal protective technology research to protect the nation’s miners, firefighters and other emergency responders, and health care, agricultural, and industrial workers. To carry out this research, NIOSH formed the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL).
Heart disease causes 45% of the deaths that occur among U.S. firefighters while
they are on duty. We examined duty-specific risks of death from coronary heart
disease among on-duty U.S. firefighters from 1994 to 2004.
We reviewed summaries provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency
of the deaths of all on-duty firefighters between 1994 and 2004, except for deaths
associated with the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Purchasing flood insurance is a wise decision for
the home or business owner . Like homeowners’
insurance, it’ s protection you hope you never
have to use. But if flooding occurs, you will be
protected as outlined in the details of your policy .
This claims guide was created by the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which
oversees the National Flood Insurance Program,
to help you through the process of filing a claim
and appealing the decision on your claim,
if necessary .

This chapter provides a review of the issues
involved in accounting for renewable and envi-
ronmental resources. It is not intended to be a
comprehensive review ofwork in this area. Rather,
it delineates the issues that are involved in envi-
ronmental accounting and presents two important
specific examples that illustrate these issues. The
first section reviews BEA’s efforts in environmental

A properly prepared and approved Records Retention Schedule is an agency’s legal
authority to do whatever needs to be done with records and documents entrusted to the
agency’s care. It certifies the life, care, and disposition of all agency records. If
subpoenaed records have been destroyed, agency schedules (AND EVIDENCE OF
COMPLIANCE WITH THOSE SCHEDULES) will defend the agency’s actions.
However, to prove there was no adverse intent when records were destroyed,
schedules must be specific and consistently used.
As new technologies emerge, the Federal government has a responsibility to lead by example. Our
government owns and manages approximately 500,000 buildings and operates more than 600,000
fleet vehicles. The electricity used for its buildings, the fuel used in its cars and trucks, and the
energy required in military operations make it the largest energy consumer in the US economy.
To me, the most extraordinary example of poor preparedness took place
in the last week of September 2005. The South had just begun the long
recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and was bracing for
the anticipated onslaught of Hurricane Rita. After Katrina, local, state, and
federal governments had been widely criticized regarding their disaster
management and were fearful of more missteps. Repercussions were
widespread: gas and oil prices around the country surged because of
current compromises of fuel supplies from the hard-hit Gulf of Mexico,
and fears for the future....
