Welcome to the second edition of Understanding
Medical-Surgical Nursing! We are thrilled with
the enthusiastic feedback we received on the
first edition, and we have worked to make this second edition
even more student-friendly. To those of you who gave
us valuable suggestions on the first edition, thank you. We
have incorporated much of what you told us into this edition
while maintaining our original vision for the book.
We initially embarked on the first edition because we
were unsatisfied with the materials available for practical/
vocational nursing students.
The phase locked loop is a feedback system comprised of a phase comparator, a low pass
filter and error amplifier in the forward signal path and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VC0) in
the feedback path. The block diagram of a basic PLL system is shown. Perhaps the single most
important point to realize when designing with the PLL is that it is a feedback system and, hence,
is characterized mathematically by the same questions that apply to other, more conventional

Part I focuses on the evolution and classiﬁcation of servos, with descriptions of servo drive actuators, ampliﬁers, feedback transducers, performance, and troubleshooting techniques.

of external tryptophan on the trp operon. The model
accounts for the effect of feedback repression by tryptophan
through the Hill equation. We demonstrate that the trp
operonmaintains an intracellular steady-state concentration
in a fivefold range irrespective of extracellular conditions.

varying levels of extracellular tryptophan illustrates the
adaptive nature of regulation.
