  • This paper presents an open-domain textual Question-Answering system that uses several feedback loops to enhance its performance. These feedback loops combine in a new way statistical results with syntactic, semantic or pragmatic information derived from texts and lexical databases. The paper presents the contribution of each feedback loop to the overall performance of 76% human-assessed precise answers.

  • A systematic control design methodology is introduced for multi-input/multi-output stable open loop plants with multiple saturations. This new methodology is a substantial improvement over previous heuristic single-input/single-output approaches. The idea is to introduce a supervisor loop so that when the references and/or disturbances are sufficiently small, the control system operates linearly as designed.

  • Feedback is an integral part of our lives. Try touching your fingertips with your eyes closed; you may not succeed the first time because you have broken a feedback loop that ordinarily “regulates” your motions. The regulatory role of feedback manifests itself in biological, mechanical, and electronic systems, allowing precise realization of “functions.” For example, an amplifier targeting a precise gain of 2.00 is designed much more easily with feedback than without.

  • The phase locked loop is a feedback system comprised of a phase comparator, a low pass filter and error amplifier in the forward signal path and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VC0) in the feedback path. The block diagram of a basic PLL system is shown. Perhaps the single most important point to realize when designing with the PLL is that it is a feedback system and, hence, is characterized mathematically by the same questions that apply to other, more conventional feedback systems.

  • The purpose of Circuit Analysis and Feedback Amplifier Theory is to provide in a single volume a comprehensive reference work covering the broad spectrum of linear circuit analysis and feedback amplifier design. It also includes the design of multiple-loop feedback amplifiers. The book is written and developed for the practicing electrical engineers in industry, government, and academia. The goal is to provide the most up-to-date information in the field.

  • Editing this book was a pleasant, but challenging job. I enjoyed reviewing chapters from different domains, bringing up-to-date empirical research studies, excellent literature reviews and controversial issues. This was an instructive experience for me and the authors. We both learned from each other, making different backgrounds a gain-gain situation, by evaluating each chapter critically from different perspectives. We are sure the reader will enjoy the end result: a selection of chapters from different psychology domains....

  • The perennially bestselling third edition of Norman A. Anderson's Instrumentation for Process Measurement and Control provides an outstanding and practical reference for both students and practitioners. It introduces the fields of process measurement and feedback control and bridges the gap between basic technology and more sophisticated systems. Keeping mathematics to a minimum, the material meets the needs of the instrumentation engineer or technician who must learn how equipment operates.

  • The representation of drug treatment in America can affect society in several ways, including stigmatization. Elizabeth Hirschman (1992), in her study of cocaine use in films, argues that "motion pictures which focus upon addiction can serve as instructive, semiotically-rich texts for communicating cultural knowledge about addiction" (p. 428). This communication is not simply one-way, though; it exists as a continual feedback loop, with movies "both reflect[ing] and shape[ing] individual and societal values, attitudes, and behavior" (Wedding, 2000, p. 3).

  • Now consider a cascade controller for a multistage process, such as a sewage treatment plant with sequential tanks with varying flow rates. Here the disturbance would be the sewage flowing into the first tank. the two process blocks are the treatment tanks. The output is water returned to rivers The controllers vary the flow rates by looking at parameters for both tanks. dn + + rn G c1 + Hf G c2 + Gp1 Gp2 rn • To do design/analysis for these controllers we do an analysis of the innermost feedback loop. This then becomes a process, and we do...

  • Sensors used for ultra-precision machines include position and velocity sensors, which are mostly part of a control loop, and for some special applications acceleration sensors for active vibration control, and thermal sensors for thermal error compensation [1]. An essential component of each positional feedback loop in a machine tool is the displacement measurement system for detecting the actual position of moving machine parts. It is the performance of such measurement systems that limits the accuracy of machine tools and hence directly affects the quality of the machined part...

  • The imagination is questionable (Daily, 1997; Dasgupta, 2000b). In any event, we should be sceptical of a theory which places such enormous burden on an experience not much more than two hundred years old (Fogel, 1994; Johnson, 2000). Extrapolation into the past is a sobering exercise: over the long haul of history (some five thousand years), economic growth even in the currently-rich countries was for most of the time not much above zero.

  • During the Bush II administration, I became concerned about changes in the rules on short selling. Along with Republican Senator Johnny Isaakson, I wrote to SEC Chair Mary Schapiro, asking her to follow up on her confirmation hearing pledge to look into reinstat-ing the “uptick rule,” which had been removed in what former SEC Chair Chris Cox admitted had been a mistake. Short sellers play an important role in maintaining an orderly market. But there also are predatory bears. If not policed, they could have a devastating effect by creating a never-ending, negative feedback loop.

  • TDD is a modern programming practice C developers need to know. It's a different way to program---unit tests are written in a tight feedback loop with the production code, assuring your code does what you think. You get valuable feedback every few minutes. You find mistakes before they become bugs. You get early warning of design problems. You get immediate notification of side effect defects. You get to spend more time adding valuable features to your product.

  • Physiology of Circadian Rhythmicity The sleep-wake cycle is the most evident of the many 24-h rhythms in humans. Prominent daily variations also occur in endocrine, thermoregulatory, cardiac, pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal, and neurobehavioral functions. At the molecular level, endogenous circadian rhythmicity is driven by self-sustaining transcriptional/translational feedback loops (Fig. 28-2). In evaluating a daily variation in humans, it is important to distinguish between those rhythmic components passively evoked by periodic environmental or behavioral changes (e.g.

  • Some studies are content with establishing simple correlations, while others involve sophisticated econometric analysis, attempting to ascertain the existence and direction of causality. Yet other studies involve complex systems with feedback loops or large simulation models with scenario analysis. Inevitably, they reach different conclusions even when they analyze the same body of data because of differences in perspectives, levels of aggregation and methods of analysis.

  • One of the core tenets of Scrum is that the duration of the Sprint is never extended – it ends on the assigned date regardless of whether the team has completed the work it committed to. If the team has not completed their Sprint Goal, they have to stand up at the end of the Sprint and acknowledge that they did not meet their commitment. The idea is that this creates a very visible feedback loop, and teams are forced to get better at estimating what they are capable of accomplishing in a given Sprint, and then delivering it more...

In our own previous work in the area of dynamic parti- tioning, we have investigated either partitioning mem- ory, through a simulation-based exhaustive search ap- proach [24], or partitioning storage bandwidth, through an adaptive feedback-loop approach [23], but not both.

  • Among the largest Member States outside the euro area, the United Kingdom is expected to see an improvement in disposable incomes and financing conditions, which should allow a gradual return of domestic demand growth in 2013 and an acceleration in 2014. For Poland, a deceleration from previous growth rates is projected as external headwinds and the stagnation in the labour market take their toll. The adjustment of the remaining imbalances is subject to a number of challenging interdependencies such as the feedback loop between banks and sovereigns, the impact on domestic...
