  • A complete and permanent hydrophilic modification of poly (ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) films is achieved by argon-plasma irradiation, subsequently grafting acrylic acid (AA) in vapor phase onto their surface. Both Ar plasma irradiation alone and post grafting AA rendered a complete hydrophilicity to PET surfaces. However, the hydrophilicity of the PET surface, only treated with the Ar plasma, is not permanent. In contrast, PET films, irradiated by the Ar plasma, exposed to air, and subsequently grafted with AA monomer, are permanently hydrophilic.

  • In this report, the poly(Tyramine) (PTyr) film structure was further studied and determined, based on IR (Infrared), XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), EQCM (Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance) results. Especially, the immobilization capacity of PTyr was investigated by EQCM in situ measurement. The results showed the film porosity had increased the immobilization capacity of PTyr, compared to other polymer film with the same NH2 surface concentration.

  • The electrooxidation of 5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (JUG) in organic media leads to conducting polymer film on glassy and Pt electrodes. The IR ex situ, IR in situ (MIRFTIRS) during the film formation, XPS studies indicate that electropolymerization occurs via the OH group while quinone group on the other ring remains intact and shows a very good electro activity and stability in different media, particularly in aqueous, biocompatible one.

  • Chemical structure of -aminonaphthalene (ANa) allows to deal with its electrochemical polymerisation, analogously as for aniline. To determine the oxidation potentials of ANa, the polymerisation has been realised on Pt electrode using cyclic polarisation. It was found that in sulphuric acid 0.5 M the first oxidation starts at 620 mV/SCE with the peak potential at 760 mV, and the second oxidation at 890 mV/SCE with the peak potential at 1230 mV. The PANa film development decreases the current peaks meaning a reduction of polymerisation rate.

  • Polyethylene-starch blend polymer has already found to be a potential candidate to replace non-degradable plastic in packaging [7]. However, the degradation of that polymer in natural ambience (soil burial test) needs to be further evaluated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degradability of PE-starch blend polymer in soil and in liquid medium. The soil is added starch degrading bacteria isolated from natural soil.

  • The chapter commences by reviewing the properties of the broad classes of materials used in film coating, polymers, plasticizers, pigments and solvents (or vehicles). An initial consideration of the polymers shows that while processing is most commonly performed using these materials in solution, there are systems which utilize polymers in suspension in water. The mechanism of coalescence and film formation for these types of materials are discussed.

  • The definition for dielectric constant relates to the permittivity of the material (symbol use here ε). The permittivity expresses the ability of a material to polarise in response to an applied field. It is the ratio of the permittivity of the dielectric to the permittivity of a vacuum. Physically it means the greater the polarisation developed by a material in an applied field of given strength, the greater the dielectric constant will be.
