  • In total, the model can generate expected excess corporate bond returns in four ways. First, through the dependence of credit spreads (or, equivalently, default intensities) on default-free term structure factors. Second, because the risk of common or systematic changes in credit spreads across firms is priced. Third, via a risk premium on firm-specific credit spread changes, and, fourth, due to a risk premium on the default jump. 1 Empirically, we find that all these terms contribute to the expected excess corporate bond return, except for the risk of firm-specific credit spread changes.

  • We present a novel system that helps nonexperts find sets of similar words. The user begins by specifying one or more seed words. The system then iteratively suggests a series of candidate words, which the user can either accept or reject. Current techniques for this task typically bootstrap a classifier based on a fixed seed set. In contrast, our system involves the user throughout the labeling process, using active learning to intelligently explore the space of similar words.

  • There are also papers suggesting that the link between central bank finances and policy outcomes is not straightforward, and that other aspects are crucial, too. For example, Ueda (2004) wrote: “Summing up the experiences of insolvent central banks, my conclusion is that the maintenance of a sound balance sheet is, in general, neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for fulfilling a central bank’s responsibility, but there have been cases where an unhealthy balance sheet became a major obstacle to price stability.

  • There has been a considerable effort to tout the merits of fiscal austerity as a route to restoring growth. This argument has been put forward in direct opposition to arguments for increased stimulus for boosting the economy. While there may be a case that lower deficits can foster growth under some circumstances, the evidence presented in the Broadbent and Daly paper does not suggest that a movement toward lower deficits in the current economic situation in the United States would be expansionary.

  • In 2005, the baseline country studies pointed to a lack of connection between advocacy for reduction of maternal mortality in national-level planning and the necessary linkage to effective programmatic responses through resource allocation, capacity- building and human-resource development. The 2011 case-studies suggest that this problem persists: despite a closing of the gap between policy and programmes, the limited progress with improving health outcomes has shown the importance of strengthening health systems – particularly for maternal and newborn health.

  • In November 2009, EIF issued a working paper on the European microfinance market. In this study, we found that there are wide spectra of final beneficiaries and intermediaries and concluded that there is no common microfinance business model in Europe. While our findings suggested that the microfinance market is immature and fragmented, they also pointed to its growing importance as a market segment with a potential to counter poverty and unemployment while fostering financial and social inclusion.

  • Staging of Small Cell Lung Cancer Pretreatment staging for patients with SCLC includes the initial general lung cancer evaluation with chest and abdominal CT scans (because of the high frequency of hepatic and adrenal involvement) as well as fiberoptic bronchoscopy with washings and biopsies to determine the tumor extent before therapy; brain CT scan (10% of patients have metastases); and radionuclide scans (bone) if symptoms or other findings suggest disease involvement in these areas.

  • The Market for Higher Education: Economic Analyses of College Choice , Returns , and State Aid Policy A thesis Present I find suggestive evidence, however, that her estimates, from a sample of public school students, are upward biased by selection into private schools. Moreover, an investigation of the sampling variability of Hoxby’s estimates leads to the conclusion that her standard errors are understated, and that even her own point estimates of the competitive effect are not significantly different from zero....

  • In this paper we consider the following problem. Given a class of episodes and an input sequence of events, find all episodes that occur frequently in the event sequence. We describe the framework and formalize the discovery task in Section 2. Algorithms for discovering all frequent episodes are given in Section 3. They are based on the idea of first finding small frequent episodes, and then progressively looking for larger frequent episodes. Additionally, the algorithms use some simple pattern matching ideas to speed up the recognition of occurrences of single episodes.

  • Stability Bonds would promote efficiency in the euro-area sovereign bond market and in the broader euro-area financial system. Stability Bond issuance would offer the possibility of a large and highly liquid market, with a single benchmark yield in contrast to the current situation of many country-specific benchmarks. The liquidity and high credit quality of the Stability Bond market would deliver low benchmark yields, reflecting correspondingly low credit risk and liquidity premiums (see Box 1).

  • This reluctance on the part of mainstream lenders creates an opportunity for microfinance but also underlines the paramount importance of credit risk management in an industry that, in Western Europe at least, continues to be driven by socially motivated investors and entities supporting microfinance as part of their social responsibility initiatives. This realisation has a significant impact on the pricing of financing instruments to such types of entities and has arguably served to undermine the development of viable microfinance models in terms of self-sustainability.

  • Internet customer service: customer service is always important and a good business website has good customer service. For example, it should allow customers access to their account, track their orders and allow them to talk to live sales representative if they desire to do so. Allowing customers’ control over their orders is expected and can make a huge difference. Most website designers think of a web site’s overall appearance and then about its functionality.
