Fluid mechanics*

The purpose of this text is to provide the basis for an upperlevel undergraduate or graduate course over one or two semesters, covering basic concepts and examples of fluid mechanics with particular applications in the natural environment. The book is designed to meet a dual purpose, providing an advanced fundamental background in the fluid mechanics of environmental systems and also applying fluid mechanics principles to a variety of environmental issues.

When students start an undergraduate course in engineering, they experience a step change in the level of complexity of the materials that had to be learned. Fluid Mechanics is one such module taught in the first year of the engineering undergraduate courses. It is a core module for Chemical, Mechanical and Civil engineers. The concepts may seem difficult and hard to grasp at the first instance but as the knowledge broadens, one may find it fascinating. This book is a collection of lecture notes developed from a series of lectures delivered to first year Chemical Engineers.

Title – Engineering Fluid Mechanics Solution Manual Author – Prof. T.T. AlShemmeri Fluid Mechanics is an essential subject in the study of the behaviour of fluids at rest and when in motion. The book is complimentary follow up for the book “Engineering Fluid Mechanics” also published on BOOKBOON, presenting the solutions to tutorial problems, to help students the option to see if they got the correct answers, and if not, where they went wrong, and change it to get the correct answers.

Central to this book are two ideas. The first is that Fluid Mechanics is relevant to a wide variety of problems that are priorities in the early 21st century, three of which are health, the environment, and energy. The second idea is that researchers in this field are applying novel methods to address these problems. Even on its most basic level, Fluid Mechanics is challenging.

Biomedical engineering is a discipline that is multidisciplinary by definition. The days when medicine was left to the physicians, and engineering was left to the engineers, seem to have passed us by. I have searched for an undergraduate/graduate level biomedical fluid mechanics textbook since I began teaching at RoseHulman in 1987. I looked for, but never found, a book that combined the physiology of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems with engineering of fluid mechanics and hematology to my satisfaction, so I agreed to write a monograph.

There are several good mechanical engineering data books on the market but these tend to be very bulky and expensive, and are usually only available in libraries as reference books. The Mechnical Engineer’s Data Handbook has been compiled with the express intention of providing a compact but comprehensive source of information of particular value to the engineer whether in the design office, drawing office, research and development department or on site.

The textbook of Open Channel Hydraulics for Engineers, also called Applied Hydraulics, emphasizes the dynamics of the openchannel flow, by attempting to provide a complete framework of the basic equations of motion of the fluid, which are used as building blocks for the treatment of many practical problems. The structure of the document, with seven chapters totally, follows a logical sequence from a description and classification of Fluid Mechanics and Open Channel Flows, as reviewed in Chapter 1. A development of the basic equation of motion for uniform flow is encountered in Chapter 2.

The aim of this chapter is to set the scene for the rest of the book by showing how the content of the remaining chapters will form the basis of the technical knowledge that a professional mechanical engineer needs during a career. By considering a typical engineering problem it is shown that the four main subjects that make up this text are really all parts of a continuous body of knowledge that will need to be used in an integrated manner. The chapter concludes by looking at the units that are used in engineering and showing the importance of keeping to a strict system of units....

Fluid mechanics is a fundamental branch of civil, chemical, and mechanical engineering which deals with the behavior of liquids and gases, particularly while flowing. This chapter provides a brief review of the vocabulary and fundamental equations of fluid mechanics, and reminds the HVAC designer of the scientific principles underlying much of the daytoday applied science calculations. See Ref. 1 or a fluid mechanics text for additional detail.
