  • Fractures are ubiquitous in the brittle lithosphere in the upper part of earth’s crust. They play a critical role in the transport of fluids. Moreover, all major discovered geothermal reservoirs and a considerable number of petroleum reservoirs are in fractured rocks. This restates the importance of studying multiphase flow behavior inside the opened fracture space. From the engineering point of view, a rock fracture as defined here is simply a complex-shaped cavity filled with fluids or solid minerals. Therefore it is understood to include cracks, joints, and faults.

  • The book "Applied Fracture Mechanics" presents a collection of articles on application of fracture mechanics methods to materials science, medicine, and engineering. In thirteen chapters, a wide range of topics is discussed, including strength of biological tissues, safety of nuclear reactor components, fatigue effects in pipelines, environmental effects on fracture among others. In addition, the book presents mathematical and computational methods underlying the fracture mechanics applications, and also developments in statistical modeling of fatigue.

  • Fracture mechanics is the field of mechanics concerned with the study of the propagation of cracks in materials. It uses methods of analytical solid mechanics to calculate the driving force on a crack and those of experimental solid mechanics to characterize the material's resistance to fracture. In modern materials science, fracture mechanics is an important tool in improving the mechanical performance of materials and components.

  • Failure of locking plate fixation due to varus collapse is a common problem for the elderly population who have osteoporotic bone with comminuted fractures. However, it is possible to increase the stability and the stiffness of the fixation system by using intramedullary fibular graft. This study compares the effectiveness of the augmented versus non-augmented locking plate fixation under clinically relevant cyclic loading. Nine pairs of cadaveric humeri were utilized with one side fixated using the augmented system and the other using the non-augmented one.

  • The fracture toughness of medium density fiberboard (MDF) as a function of crack length was measured. Fracture toughness was determined from force–displacement and crack length data using a new energy analysis procedure that avoids the scatter of prior discrete analysis methods. Because crack lengths were difficult to observe, they were measured using digital image correlation (DIC). The R curves for two different densities of MDF, two thicknesses, and for both in-plane and through-the-thickness cracks all increased linearly with crack length.

  • There is a vast multitude of materials with strongly differing properties. A copper wire, for instance, can be bent easily into a new shape, whereas a rubber band will snap back to its initial form after deformation, while the attempt to bend a glass tube ends with fracture of the tube. The strongly differing properties are reflected in the application of engineering materials – you would neither want to build cars of glass nor rubber bridges. The multitude of materials enables the engineer to select the best-suited one for any particular component.

  • CO2 injection has recently been shown to provide significant enhanced oil recovery from naturally fractured reservoirs1. Li et al. (2000) performed CO2 injection at 1750 psig on artificially-fractured cores after water flooding in a dead-oil system. Gravity drainage was suggested to be the dominant recovery mechanism in these tests, with significant tertiary oil recovery after water flooding. The authors observed that the recovery of initial oil at the start of the CO2 injection declined as the rock permeability decreased and the initial water saturation increased....

  • Colles fracture In 1813, Abraham Colles described the Colles fracture, which is reported to be the most common distal radial fracture. The injury is usually produced by a fall onto an outstretched hand (FOOSH) mechanism with the wrist in dorsiflexion. The impact produces a transverse fracture in the distal 2-3 cm of the radial articular surface. The fracture is dorsally displaced and may be comminuted. The fracture pattern is often described as a silver or dinner-fork deformity.
