The number of applications for RFID systems has increased each year and various
research directions have been developed to improve the performance of these systems.
Therefore IN-TECH publisher has decided to continue the series of books dedicated to the
latest results of research in the RFID field and launch a new book, entitled “Radio Frequency
Identification Fundamentals and Applications, Design Methods and Solutions”, which
could support the further development of RFID.

We propose a novel method to automatically acquire a term-frequency-based taxonomy from a corpus using an unsupervised method. A term-frequency-based taxonomy is useful for application domains where the frequency with which terms occur on their own and in combination with other terms imposes a natural term hierarchy. We highlight an application for our approach and demonstrate its effectiveness and robustness in extracting knowledge from real-world data.
Frequency distribution models tuned to words and other linguistic events can predict the number of distinct types and their frequency distribution in samples of arbitrary sizes. We conduct, for the ﬁrst time, a rigorous evaluation of these models based on cross-validation and separation of training and test data. Our experiments reveal that the prediction accuracy of the models is marred by serious overﬁtting problems, due to violations of the random sampling assumption in corpus data. We then propose a simple pre-processing method to alleviate such non-randomness problems. ...

In the past years, a number of lexical association measures have been studied to help extract new scientiﬁc terminology or general-language collocations. The implicit assumption of this research was that newly designed term measures involving more sophisticated statistical criteria would outperform simple counts of cooccurrence frequencies. We here explicitly test this assumption.
We introduce the zipfR package, a powerful and user-friendly open-source tool for LNRE modeling of word frequency distributions in the R statistical environment. We give some background on LNRE models, discuss related software and the motivation for the toolkit, describe the implementation, and conclude with a complete sample session showing a typical LNRE analysis.
We present a language-independent and unsupervised algorithm for the segmentation of words into morphs. The algorithm is based on a new generative probabilistic model, which makes use of relevant prior information on the length and frequency distributions of morphs in a language. Our algorithm is shown to outperform two competing algorithms, when evaluated on data from a language with agglutinative morphology (Finnish), and to perform well also on English data.
