  • In this paper, we adopt an n-best rescoring scheme using pitch-accent patterns to improve automatic speech recognition (ASR) performance. The pitch-accent model is decoupled from the main ASR system, thus allowing us to develop it independently. N-best hypotheses from recognizers are rescored by additional scores that measure the correlation of the pitch-accent patterns between the acoustic signal and lexical cues.

  • The efficiency of a book is like that of a man, in one important respect: its attitude toward its subject is the first source of its power. A book may be full of good ideas well expressed, but if its writer views his subject from the wrong angle even his excellent advice may prove to be ineffective. This book stands or falls by its authors' attitude toward its subject. If the best way to teach oneself or others to speak effectively in public is to fill the mind with rules, and to set up fixed standards for the interpretation of thought, the utterance of language,...

  • This volume contains three chapters written by distinguished scientists from Europe, South America, and Asia. When it comes to the chemistry and physics of carbon, as reflected by the authorship in this series since its inception 40 years ago, globalization (a popular term among today’s politicians and economists) has always been the rule rather than the exception or a recent trend. If anything, The New York Times editorial of May 7, 2004 is indeed correct in its conclusion that “the United States . . .

  • In addition to emphasizing long-horizon expected returns, the approach taken here differs from previous treatments in that it uses ex ante estimates of expected returns, rather than ex post actual returns. Expected returns are estimated by incorporating corporate cash flow projections into an expanded version of the Campbell and Shiller (1988, 1989) dividend-price ratio model, in which the log of the price-earnings ratio is a linear function of required future returns, expected earnings growth rates, and expected dividend payout rates.

  • I am enormously grateful to all of authors who have contributed to this volume on gas– liquid foam. One of the great pleasures of working with such accomplished scientists and engineers from industry and academia is that everybody has known the level at which to pitch their contributions. Special thanks are due to Laurie Schramm who, along with co-authors, has contributed two chapters on foams in enhanced oil recovery and flotation of oil sands, and to Thomas Martin who endured initial confusion upon my part to produce a first class chapter on firefighting foams....

However, the basic idea is that pitch, profile and helix errors may combine with tooth bending, gear body distortions and whole gear body deflections to give an overall relative deflection (from smooth running) at the meshpoint between the gears. It is also difficult to convince gear engineers that there is a very big difference between roll (double flank) checking, which is extremely cheap and easy, and T.E. (single flank) checking since they give rather similar looking results.
