  • Despite Sumatran Tigers being fully protected by law, with tough provisions for jail time and steep fines, as well as increased effort in tiger conservation and building law enforcement and antipoaching capacity, this survey demonstrates the existence of a substantial market for tiger parts and products in Sumatra.

  • A major physiological adaptation of the camel is its ability to allow its body temperature to fluctuate. The normal diurnal variation in a fully hydrated camel does not exceed 2°C and is in the range of about 36 to 38°C. In a 500 kg animal the heat stored as a result of diurnal variation of this order would be about 4.2 x 106 (joules). In dehydrated camels, when considerations of energy and water conservation become more important, temperature variation can be as much as 8°C in the range of 34 to 42°C, but a more normal range is 6°C...

  • The summer/winter difference in plasma volume may be related to the regularly observed summer fall in red blood cell values and total protein. In a fully dehydrated camel with 65% body water, alimentary water has been reported as 12%, which is similar to the figure for tropical cattle. The total water content of the camel is considerably greater in hot dry weather (up to 75%) than in cooler periods (down to 50%), which indicates its physiological water conserving capability.

  • The outputs of an ARIES session have numerous practical uses for conservation and economic development planning. Notably, they can show which regions are critical to maintaining the supply and flows of particular benefits for specific beneficiary groups. By prioritizing conservation and restoration activities around sources and sinks for particular services, benefit flows may be maintained or increased. Similarly, focusing development or extractive resource use outside these regions can prevent degradation of benefit flows.

  • What a difference a few years can make! The financial crisis that engulfed mature economies in the late 2000s has prompted much soul searching. Economists are now trying hard to incorporate financial factors into standard macroeconomic models. However, the prevailing, in fact almost exclusive, strategy is a conservative one. It is to graft additional so-called financial “frictions” on otherwise fully well behaved equilibrium macroeconomic models, built on real-business-cycle foundations and augmented with nominal rigidities.

  • Ech hydrogenase fromMethanosarcina barkeriis a member of a distinct group of membrane-bound [NiFe] hydrogenases with sequence similarity to energy-conserving NADH:quinone oxidoreductase (complex I). The sequence of the enzyme predicts the binding of three [4Fe-4S] clusters, one by subunit EchC and two by subunit EchF. Previous studies had shown that two of these clusters could be fully reduced under 10 5 Pa of H2at pH 7 giving rise to two distinct S½ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals, designated as the g¼1.89 and theg¼1.92 signal....

  • The chaperone calreticulin is a highly conserved eukaryotic protein mainly located in the endoplasmic reticulum. It contains a free cysteine SH group but does not form disul-fide-bridged dimers under physiological conditions,indica-ting that the SH group may not be fully accessible in the native protein. Using PAGE,urea gradient gel electro-phoresis,capillary electrophoresis and MS,we show that dimerization through the SH group can be induced by lowering the pH to 5–6,heating,or under conditions that favour partial unfolding such as urea concentrations above 2.
