  • In the 40s the first computers were built. The very first models were ‘programmed’ by means of huge connection boards. Soon the program was stored in computer memory, introducing the first programming languages. Because in those days computer use was very expensive, it was obvious to have the programming language resemble the architecture of the computer as close as possible. A computer consists of a central processing unit and a memory. Therefore a program consisted of instructions to modify the memory, executed by the processing unit. With that the imperative programming style arose.

  • In this volume I present some examples of Basic Concepts, Examination of Functions, Level Curves and Level Surfaces and Description of Curves, cf. also Calculus 2b, Functions of Several Variables. Since my aim also has been to demonstrate some solution strategy I have as far as possible structured the examples according to the following form A Awareness, i.e. a short description of what is the problem. D Decision, i.e. a reflection over what should be done with the problem. I Implementation, i.e. where all the calculations are made. C Control, i.e. a test of the result.

  • Brain morphology is in constant change from the very beginning of the neurodevelopment in human beings. The characterization of the brain morphology and its biological implications on a specific subject is a complex task which requires efficient computational approaches. Radiology has traditionally assessed the main brain changes in different alterations from a macroscopic point of view, thus, not considering subtle changes as a results of neuronal plasticity.

  • This is the ninth book containing examples from the Theory of Complex Functions. We shall here treat the important Argument Principle, which e.g. is applied in connection with Criteria of Stability in Cybernetics. Finally, we shall also consider the Many-valued functions and their pitfalls. Even if I have tried to be careful about this text, it is impossible to avoid errors, in particular in the first edition. It is my hope that the reader will show some understanding of my situation.

  • Human P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which conveys multidrug resistance, is an ATP-dependent drug efflux pump that transports a wide variety of struc-turally unrelated compounds out of cells. P-gp possesses a ‘linker region’ of75 amino acids that connects two homologous halves, each of which contain a transmembrane domain followed by a nucleotide-binding domain.

  • Processing discourse connectives is important for tasks such as discourse parsing and generation. For these tasks, it is useful to know which connectives can signal the same coherence relations. This paper presents experiments into modelling the substitutability of discourse connectives. It shows that substitutability effects distributional similarity. A novel variancebased function for comparing probability distributions is found to assist in predicting substitutability.

  • Study differences in experimental design, including choice of spectral bands, brain regions, brain states (activated or resting) and type of analysis, as well as small sample sizes, differences in sample age ranges, diversityofseverityofimpairment, lack of replication tests and disparity of results make difficult a meaningful summary of spectral coherence findings in ASD. Furthermore, few studies considered the reality of ASD group-specific EEG artifacts, including eye blink and muscle movement, and their potential spurious effects upon coherence.

  • In today’s practical and cost-conscious world, sheet-metal parts have already replaced many expensive cast, forged, and machined products. The reason is obviously the relative cheapness of stamped, or otherwise mass-produced parts, as well as greater control of their technical and aesthetic parameters. That the world slowly turned away from heavy, ornate, and complicated shapes, and replaced them with functional, simple, and logical forms only enhanced this tendency. Remember old bathtubs? They used to be cast and had ornamental legs.
