This is not to say that economics has a monopoly when it comes to fac-tors that affect science or in providing a lens for examining science. Other
disciplines— and their foci— contribute considerably to the study of science.
Sociology, for example, contributes a great deal to the understanding of how
science is or ga nized and the reward structure of science. It is also not to say
that science is the only factor that contributes to economic growth. Politics
and values, for example, clearly play important roles....
Discuss how incentives af fect people’s behavior
The word economy comes from the Greek word for “one who manages a household.” At first, this origin might seem peculiar. But, in fact, households and economies have much in common. A household faces many decisions.
Recently, the resettlement activities of Son La hydroelectric power station (SHPS) have been carrying out within three provinces: Son La, Lai Chau, and Dien Bien. The main problem is !hat with limited land fund for resett1emcnt (each household has about 1-2 ha of agricultural land in average ), the land use and argicultural production organization should be ensure favorable conditions for resettled people.
Scientific research is becoming increasingly more globalized and more collaborative. At the same time, there is growing pressure within the United States to justify government funding for science and technology (S
Historically, charitable trusts and foundations have
sought to prevent acute social problems in the UK,
using grants to demonstrate and fund interventions
that improve social outcomes and reduce the number
of individuals requiring crisis interventions. Trust and
foundation resources are limited however – only
£4.4bn9 per year compared to government budgets
of £603bn10 – enabling them to demonstrate effective
interventions, but not to make them available to
everyone who would benefi t.
In addition, the fact that there have been few studies investigating the efficacy of
conversational implicature to enhance Japanese high school students’ communicative
competence was another cause for me to start this research. Though some experimental
studies have been done (see Bouton,1992; Broersma, 1994; Kubota, 1995; and Taguchi,
2007), the subjects of their research were university students and immigrants. Few people
seem to have examined students’ development of communicative ability in Japanese high
In 2001 I was contacted by a consortium of research institutions and wind energy
interests with a request to provide some background information on the operational
characteristics of acoustic radars or SODARs. The consortium partners had set
up and been funded for an European EU project to evaluate SODARs as a tool in
monitoring wind flows at wind turbine sites. They felt reasonably confident in their
knowledge of SODARs and had purchased some instruments, but wanted to be able
to consult on any more complex issues which arose.
In November 2009, EIF issued a working paper on the European microfinance market. In this
study, we found that there are wide spectra of final beneficiaries and intermediaries and
concluded that there is no common microfinance business model in Europe. While our findings
suggested that the microfinance market is immature and fragmented, they also pointed to its
growing importance as a market segment with a potential to counter poverty and unemployment
while fostering financial and social inclusion.
The development of goat production system in Vietnam has been boosted by the government of Vietnam through the establishment and support for research centers goats and rabbits Shanxi in the north of Vietnam. The initiatives developed at this center through both national and international programs R & D has been successfully implemented local farms in the north, and both national and government province needs to promote similar projects in central and southern Vietnam. While many technologies, expertise and funds to apply to the small farmers are limited....
In recognition of the importance of establishing gender
equality around the world, the United Nations
Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) was
established as a separate fund within the United
Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 1984. At that
time, the General Assembly instructed it to “ensure
women’s involvement with mainstream activities.”3 The
Platform of Action resulting from the 1995 Beijing World
Conference on Women expanded this concept, calling
it “gender mainstreaming”—i.e.
Performing experiments in low Earth orbit has been the focus of much of the research funded by
NASA’s Physical Sciences Division (PSD) and its predecessors for over 30 years. This microgravity
research can be divided into five broad areas, all of which focus primarily on phenomena that are
strongly perturbed by gravity: biotechnology, combustion, fluid physics, fundamental physics, and
Finance is all about the systems, institutions and
instruments involved in the transfer of funds between
individuals, businesses and governments. This includes
vital, short-run decisions such as cash management and
credit policy, which affect the survival of an organisation,
as well as long-term decisions such as investment in plant
and equipment, fund-raising, and mergers and takeovers,
which determine the wealth of stakeholders.

Are you curious about how we should deal with issues like climate change, international terrorism, decision-making in democracies, migration, an ageing population, social and health insurance? Do you wonder whether the market can always regulate itself, or whether policy is sometimes required to step in? Don't you dare to ask questions that don’t have straightforward answers? The Public Economics track offers you the possibility to do just that
Brazil’s equity market has grown rapidly in terms of both market capitalization and
transaction volumes. Total equity market capitalization was about 55 percent of GDP in 2011
with a diversified investor base including individuals, institutional investors, financial
institutions, and foreign investors. This growth has been fueled by a combination of strong
market performance and a steady increase in the total quantity of shares.
Our sample contains a total of 1301 open-end, no-load U.S. domestic equity mutual
funds, which include actively managed funds, index funds, sector funds, and ETFs
(exchange traded funds). Monthly net returns, as well as annual turnover and expense
ratios for the funds, are obtained from the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP)
mutual fund database over the sample period January 1975–December 2002. Additional
data on fund investment objectives are obtained from the Thomson/CDA Spectrum files.
Across the four investment
categories, the F DR among the worst funds is always inferior to 50 percent and
increases slowly as the significant level rises. It means that the majority of worst funds
truly yield negative alphas and that the latter are largely spread in the left tail of the
alpha distribution. The F DR among the best funds is generally much higher than the
F DR among the worst funds. For All and G funds, the F DR is always higher than 50
percent, while it amounts to 100 percent for the GI funds. The only exception comes
from the AG funds. Its low F...
The deferral of the mandatory IFRS changeover date
to January 1, 2014 is to prevent Canadian investment
companies and segregated accounts of life insurance
enterprises from having to change their current
accounting treatment for controlled investees while
the IASB finalizes its proposed investment entities
standard. Under IFRS 10 Consolidated Financial
Statements, investment companies are required to
consolidate their controlled investments.
This environment could change if the downward shift of yield curve continues. Anecdotal
evidence suggests that institutional investors are becoming more sensitive to changes in
financial market conditions and therefore are increasingly interested in higher-return
generating assets and more sophisticated styles in fund management. Indeed, the fall in the
short term interest rate since last August appears to have been gradually affecting investors’
behavior. Clients’ requests for daily liquidity have decreased at the margin. ...
