The third edition of
The Fungal Community
has been compiled by a new set of editors. The
three of us were impressed with the quality and content of the previous two editions and
hope that we have matched the work of George Carroll and Don Wicklow in this new volume.
The aims and objectives of this volume are explained in our introductory chapter,
but in brief, we have tried to address some of the current discussions in ecology (diversity
and function, scaling issues, disturbance, invasive species) from a fungal perspective.
Why did I decide to write this book? As an undergraduate student I could not
make up my mind whether I wanted to be a zoologist or a botanist, so I decided to
adopt ecology, in its broadest sense, as my area of interest. This led me to think
about interactions among organisms and to try to look at ecosystems from a
holistic, rather than from an autecological, point of view. As someone with little
formal training in mycology, my interest in fungi started during my doctoral
research, especially when attending university-wide lectures by C. T. Ingold,
given at the University of London.
The connection between the client and the database server is a key component of the
overall architecture of a computing system. The database connection is responsible
for supporting all communications between an application and the data it uses. Ora-
cle includes a number of features that establish and tune your database connections.
The following features relate to the way the Oracle database handles the connection
between the client and server machines in a database interaction.

Compost Tea: A basic product used to build soil structure, add to the organic matter content of the soil and helps
hold valuable nutrients in the soil. This tea is made from the leachate of compost and may be the best foliar feeding
tool of all. It is not only an effective foliar fertilizer, it has powerful insect ñ and disease ñ control properties. The
humic materials and microorganisms in compost tea are effective on many pests. German researchers studied the
effects of compost tea, but gardeners have known its beneficial properties for years.
Calpain 7, a mammalian ortholog of yeast Cpl1⁄Rim13 and fungal PalB, is
an atypical calpain that lacks a penta-EF-hand domain. Previously, we
reported that a region containing a tandem repeat of microtubule-interact-ing and transport (MIT) domains in calpain 7 interacts with a subset of
endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT)-III-related
proteins, suggesting involvement of calpain 7 in the ESCRT system.
