  • This paper summarizes the presentations and discussion at the Energy Options for the Future meeting held at the Naval Research Laboratory in March of 2004. The presentations covered the present status and future potential for coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass energy sources and the effect of measures for energy conservation. The longevity of current major energy sources, means for resolving or mitigating environmental issues, and the role to be played by yet to be deployed sources, like fusion, were major topics of presentation and discussion....

  • On the other hand, salinity affects 7-9 % of the world’s land area (Szabolcs, 1994), and the area is increasing (Ghassemi et al., 1995). Nowadays, one of the major technological goals of the energy production is the replacement of the fossil-based fuel for biofuel, mainly due to environmental issues. Bearing that in mind, it is mandatory to investigate the effect of water deficit and salinity stress in plant species with high potential for application in large scale production of nonfossil based fuels....

  • Height and weight of the subjects were measured using standard procedures. The weight was measured using SECA balance with minimum of cloths to the nearest of 100 gms and height was measured using an anthropometric rod to the minimum of 0.5 cm. Body mass index (BMI : weight in kg/height in meters2 ) was calculated from heights and weights. A value ≤ 18.5 is considered as a cut-off point for chronic energy deficiency (CED) or undernutrition (thinness), while BMI ≥ 25 is considered as overweight or obese. Prevalence of diseases in both groups separately was calculated.

  • Most of the concern about mercury focuses on lakes and other aquatic ecosystems, such as rivers, streams, wetlands and oceans. The levels of mercury found in terrestrial environments are usually not high enough to threaten the health of wildlife and humans. But some aquatic environments favour the transformation of mercury into its more poisonous form — methylmercury — and it is the bioac- cumulation of methylmercury in fish and marine mammals that presents a potential problem when they are consumed by humans.

From a linguistic point of view, a key component of the task corresponds to identifying the semantic arguments filling the roles of the sentence predicates. Typical predicate semantic arguments include Agent, Patient, and Instrument, but semantic roles may also be found as adjuncts (e.g., Locative, Temporal, Manner, and Cause).

  • Introduction individuals outside the limits of its own close-knit community? As long as the answer remains "virtually nothing," our work will generally be viewed as an ivory tower enterprise. As soon as the answer becomes a set of useful computer systems, we will be viewed as the people who produce such systems and who aspire to produce better ones. My point here is that the commercial marketplace will tend to judge both our science and our engineering in terms of our existing or potential engineering products. ...

  • The biological changes underlying the transition process from gingival health to early inflammatory changes involve local increase in vascular permeability, edema and the recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) (Delima and Van Dyke 2003). Acquired immune response becomes involved once antigen-presenting cells interact with immunocompetent cells, such as T and B lymphocytes, leading to the expansion of antibody-secreting plasma cells and the development of the chronic lesion (Gemmell and Seymour 2004).
