  • The purpose of writing this book was to overview recent hot topics in gastroenterology with a focus directed towards information derived from the bench and used at the patient's bedside. To address these issues, scientists who are working on a daily basis in the field of experimental gastroenterology and clinical investigators, with their chapter proposal's being peer-reviewed, all have integrated their attempts to summarize the recent advances in the pathophysiology and therapy of upper and lower gastrointestinal tract disorders....

  • The object of this book is to approach gastroenterology in the way that patients present, rather than in traditional organ based physiology and pathology. Both approaches have drawbacks, and diseases do not necessarily fit cleanly into either grouping. We have attempted to cover topics in two-page 'learning units' but of necessity some require more extensive coverage and this has been given. In keeping with other books in this series, the format uses individually designed double page spreads, generously illustrated with photographs, line drawings and tables....

  • Acute emergencies in gastroenterology are extraordinarily severe conditions with high morbidity and mortality. Particularly severe diseases include acute pancreatitis, a difficult course of non-specific intestinal inflammations manifested by toxic colon or acute intestinal obstruction, and even acutely developed intestinal pseudo-obstruction (Ogilvie’s syndrome) or variceal and non-variceal bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract.

The 99% are obligate anaerobes and varies species were then classified using traditional anaerobic culture techniques.

  • This issue of Gastroenterology Clinics of North America focuses on an important area in gastroenterology for both clinicians and researchers: neurogastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders. GI motility and functional GI disorders are common reasons for patients to see physicians. Knowledge of GI motility disorders, including the evaluation and treatment of these disorders, is important for gastroenterologists, clinicians, and health care providers to appropriately care for these frequently seen patients in clinical practice.

  • There was a time, long ago, when endoscopy was a small off-shoot of gastroenterology, and when most of what budding endoscopists needed to know could be covered in a slim book. Thus Practical Gastrointestinal Endoscopy was conceived by Christopher Williams and myself over 25 years ago, and had a successful run through four editions. The field has expanded enormously over that time. The number and variety of procedures, and the relevant scientific literature, have proliferated, and there is now a hierarchy within endoscopy.

  • The advantages and limitations of conventional structural MRI for the diagnosis and monitoring of MS are discussed by Andreadou (Chapter 15). There is often a disparity between the level of structural abnormality seen on MRI and level of cognitive difficulties expressed by the patient with MS. Clinical interview and neuropsychological assessment are vitally impairment, not only from an initial diagnostic perspective but also in terms of longer term planning and care.

  • Endoscopy is a fast moving field, and new techniques are constantly emerging. Gastrointestinal endoscopy has a central role in the evaluation of gastrointestinal complaints and in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal diseases. It is a very safe procedure in the general population as demonstrated by numerous studies. Several data provide a better understanding of pathogenic mechanisms. In recent decades, gastrointestinal endoscopy has evolved and branched out from a visual diagnostic modality to impressive interventional capabilities.

  • Women who are abused have poorer mental and physical health, more injuries, and a greater need for medical resources than non-abused women. 4 The WHO Multi-Country Study on Women’s Health and Domestic Violence found that abused women in Brazil, Japan, and Peru are almost twice as likely as non-abused women to report their current health status as poor or very poor. 5 The impact of gender-based abuse on physical health can be immediate and long-term. Women who are abused rarely seek medical care for acute trauma, however.

  • Such an integrative approach in basic and clinical gastroenterology seems to be essential for the pathomechanism, proper diagnosis and management of patients who suffer from gastrointestinal disorders. The potential reader will not only find in this book the recent advances in the physiology and pathomechanism of GI tract disorders, but also the treatment options based on pharmacological and surgical intervention and the recent advances in the biological therapy with probiotics and prebiotics, which nowadays is a rapidly growing area of interest.
