Globalization exerts positive and negative impacts on health and has
been linked to reduced government expenditures on health, education,
and social programs, and restructured workplace and home life. Globalization
is altering gender roles and relationships and influencing health
determinants. Asymmetric rights and responsibilities, labor market segregation,
consumption patterns, and discrimination are influenced differently
by globalization and affect men and women’s health in distinct ways.
Drawing from field research in Cameroon, Ghana, Vietnam, and the Amazon forests of Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru, this book explores the relationship between gender and land, revealing the workings of global capital and of people's responses to it. A central theme is the people's resistance to global forces, frequently through an insistence on the uniqueness of their livelihoods.
Research presented by Alumit Ishai at the conference aimed to
throw light on the role of gender and sexual orientation on ratings
of attractiveness for male and female faces. Participants included
heterosexual and homosexual men and women. The results
showed that for heterosexual women and homosexualmen, activa-
tion in orbitofrontal cortex was higher for attractive male faces
than attractive female faces, whereas the converse was true for
heterosexual men and homosexual women.
The stratification variables related to the level of education and occupational status were
set as “soft quotas”, that is, a margin of oscillation was allowed around the predefined
strata size required.
In setting the theoretical sample, it was further decided to opt for non-proportional

The Government understands that IPTV will indeed play an important role in the
future of television broadcasting. It is Government‘s expectation that local TV
will develop in two phases, the first as outlined in this paper through services
carried on the DTT platform; the second through IPTV. The inherent limitations
of spectrum, including the geographic interleaved spectrum proposed in this
framework, mean that not all viewers will be able to receive local TV in the first
phase. However, the Government aims to have the best superfast broadband in
Europe by 2015.
During the conflict and civil war in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly between 1992 and
1995, armed factions turned the traditional norms of honor and shame into weapons of
war, engaging in rape and sexual assault against women of opposing groups as an ultimate
means of dishonoring entire communities and reducing people's capacities to resist military
advances.2 In response, concerns about women's security led to the imposition of ever
stricter interpretations of what constitutes socially acceptable behavior, supported by the
most conservative reading of the holy scriptures.
