  • Computational synthetic biology has borrowed methods, concepts, and techniques from systems biology and electrical engineering. Features of tools for the analysis of biochemical networks and the design of electric circuits have been combined to develop new software, where Standard Biological Parts (physically stored at the MIT Registry) have a mathematical description, based on mass action or Hill kinetics, and can be assembled into genetic networks in a visual, “drag & drop” fashion.

  • Event detection is one of the required services in sensor network applications such as environmental monitoring and object tracking. Composite event detection faces several challenges. The first challenge is uncertainty caused by variety of factors, while the second one is heterogeneity of sensor nodes in sensing capabilities. Finally, distributed detection, which is vital to facilitate uncovering composite events in large scale sensor networks, is challenging.

  • Nowadays, with over a thousand bacterial genomes sequenced, even greater opportunities have opened for experimental or computational global analysis of metabolism, physiology, and evolution. In particular, the access to comprehensive sets of molecular components (genes, proteins, regulatory signals) is at the basis of the development of novel integrative approaches, aiming at understanding the function of specific sets of these components (operons, regulons, metabolic pathways, protein complexes, etc.) in the context of the whole organism.

  • Companies must protect confidential information from eavesdropping or tampering during transmission. By implementing Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) enterprises can establish private, secure communications across a public network—usually the Internet—and extend their corporate networks to remote offices, mobile users, telecommuters, and extranet partners.

  • Due to the unavoidable nonbiological variations accompanying many experiments, it is imperative to consider a way of unravelling the functional interaction structure of a cellular network (e.g. signalling cascades or gene networks) by using the qualitative information of time-series experimental data instead of computation through the measured absolute values.

  • We present an approach using syntactosemantic rules for the extraction of relational information from biomedical abstracts. The results show that by overcoming the hurdle of technical terminology, high precision results can be achieved. From abstracts related to baker’s yeast, we manage to extract a regulatory network comprised of 441 pairwise relations from 58,664 abstracts with an accuracy of 83–90%. To achieve this, we made use of a resource of gene/protein names considerably larger than those used in most other biology related information extraction approaches. ...

  • For example, in the case of a multinational corporation, it might be reason- able to assume a high degree of control and coordination in the administration of the cluster of subnets of the corporation’s intranet. The administrators of this intranet might very well be able to design and manage the whole network of event servers deployed on their subnets, and thus it might be a good idea to adopt a hierarchical architecture within the intranet. Of course, the intranet would connect to other networks outside of the influence of the administrators.

  • Proteins are the driving force for all cellular processes. They regulate several cellular events through binding to different partners in the cell. They are capable of binding to other proteins, peptides, DNA, and also RNA. These interactions are essential in the regulation of cell fates and could be important in drugs development. For example RNA interacting proteins regulate gene expression through the binding to different mRNAs. These mRNAs could be involved in important cellular processes such as cell survival or apoptosis.

  • An extended range of new sensing applications and solutions have emerged in different fields such as rural and forest fire detection [1], monitoring of industrial manufacturing processes [2], transport/logistics [3], and for personal services in areas such as healthcare and Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) [4]. These new advanced applications based on a new generation of sensing and communication capabilities are a consequence of the continuous advances in sensor technologies and wireless communication protocols that allow for greater autonomy of sensor nodes.

  • Perimeter security solutions control access to critical network applications, data, and services so that only legitimate users and information can pass through the network. This access control is handled by routers and switches with access control lists (ACLs) and by dedicated firewall appliances. A firewall provides a barrier to traffic crossing a network’s “perimeter” and permits only authorized traffic to pass, according to a predefined security policy. Complementary tools, including virus scanners and content filters, also help control network perimeters.

  • Inspired by the work of Dubois and Laurent (1994), Leibenstein (1950), Mason (1992), Kapferer (1998), Eastman et al. (1999) Phau and Prendergast (2000), and Dubois et al. (2001) on the evaluation of luxury brands, Vigneron and Johnson (2004) developed a framework of ‗brand luxury index‘ proposing that the luxury-seeking consumer‘s decision-making process can be explained by five main factors that form a semantic network.

  • The challenge of the American automobile has had citizens, planners, and environmentalists stumped for decades. How will it ever be possible to get Americans to give up their love affair with cars? One of the most effective solutions to date is a project known as car-sharing: a network of cars and trucks for people to use on a pay-per-use basis. Rather than simply pointing out the negative conse- quences of automobile dependency and associated sprawl, car-sharing offers a practical, tangible way to improve the environment, promote social equity and build local capacity.
