  • The general picture is that older people of today are healthier than older people of two decades ago. There have been improvements in most dimensions of health. People live longer and have fewer disabilities, have less functioning loss, and report themselves to be in better health. Over time there has been some reduction in risk from smoking and a lowering of cholesterol and average triglyceride levels. However, weight increase has been notable during this period.

  • To the memory of Rodica Simion The goals of this paper are two-fold. First, we prove, for an arbitrary finite root system Φ, the periodicity conjecture of Al. B. Zamolodchikov [24] that concerns Y -systems, a particular class of functional relations playing an important role in the theory of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Algebraically, Y -systems can be viewed as families of rational functions defined by certain birational recurrences formulated in terms of the root system Φ.

  • We present an efficient procedure for cost-based abduction, which is based on the idea of using chart parsers as proof procedures. We discuss in detail three features of our algorithm - - goal-driven bottom-up derivation, tabulation of the partial results, and agenda control mechanism - - and report the results of the preliminary experiments, which show how these features improve the computational efficiency of cost-based abduction.

  • Existing work in the extraction of commonsense knowledge from text has been primarily restricted to factoids that serve as statements about what may possibly obtain in the world. We present an approach to deriving stronger, more general claims by abstracting over large sets of factoids. Our goal is to coalesce the observed nominals for a given predicate argument into a few predominant types, obtained as WordNet synsets. The results can be construed as generically quantified sentences restricting the semantic type of an argument position of a predicate....

  • The relative efficiency of education and health spending is assessed by comparing expenditure levels and associated outcomes in G7 countries and other OECD countries. This is done using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique, which was developed for estimating best-practice frontiers and relative efficiency in business applications. In this case, DEA is used to assess the relationship between spending (inputs) and outcomes (production) across countries.

  • What constitutes a just tax system, and what are its moral foundations? Should a society's tax regime be designed to achieve a just distribution of wealth among its citizens, or should such a regime be designed to promote economic growth, rising standards of living, and increasing levels of employment? Are these two goals compatible or incompatible? Why should justice not require, or at least lead to, an increase in general prosperity? The essays in this volume examine the history of tax policies and the normative principles that have informed the selection of various types of taxes and tax...

  • As educators and staff wrote and reviewed the standards for grades 3, 5, and 7, their goal was to provide a logical progression in the breadth and depth of what students will be expected to know and be able to do from one grade to the next. The two examples below show how the Framework standards have been articulated for specific grade levels; in these examples, the grades 3, 5, and 7 standards are presented for the first time in this Supplement, while the grades 3–4, 5–6, and 7– 8 standards are quoted from the Framework. For some standards, it is...

Among natural products there is nolie whirh performs this function as surely and as dramatically as does morphine. Unfortunately morphine elicits other reactions, many of them undesirable ones, and it is therefore little wonder that it has been subjected to an investigational scrutiny unequalled in science.

  • The perception of threat, or actual occurrence of conflict, is necessary for the initiation of conflict prevention or management measures, and hence it is essential to address the concept of conflict before exploring how to prevent and manage such occurrences. The first step is to understand what a conflict is made up by exactly. The starting point for this paper is the traditional definitions of conflicts (presented below), according to which a conflict is the result of opposing interests involving scarce resources, goal divergence and frustration.

  • This paper reports the results of a preliminary experiment on the detection of semantic variants of terms in a French technical document. The general goal of our work is to help the structuration of terminologies. Two kinds of semantic variants can be found in traditional terminologies : strict synonymy links and fuzzier relations like see-also. We have designed three rules which exploit general dictionary information to infer synonymy relations between complex candidate terms. The results have been examined by a human terminologist.
