  • We present a general treatment of the comparative that is based on more basic linguistic elements so that the underlying system can be effectively utilized: in the syntactic analysis phase, the comparative is treated the same as similar structures; in the syntactic regularization phase, the comparative is transformed into a standard form so that subsequent proceasing is basically unaffected by it. The scope of quantifiers under the comparative is also integrated into the system in a general way. ...

  • This volume covers the technologies that are applied to the treatment and purification of water. Those who are generally familiar with this field will immediately embrace the subject as a treatise on solid-liquid separations. However, the subject is much broader, in that the technologies discussed are not just restricted to pollution control hardware that rely only upon physical methods of treating and purifymg wastewaters.

  • Principles of Chemotherapy Medical oncology is the subspecialty of internal medicine that cares for and designs treatment approaches to patients with cancer, in conjunction with surgical and radiation oncologists. The core skills of the medical oncologist include the use of drugs that may have a beneficial effect on the natural history of the patient's illness or favorably influence the patient's quality of life. In general, the curability of a tumor is inversely related to tumor volume and directly related to drug dose.

  • With an overall incidence of more than 800 cases per 1 million persons per year, only motor vehicle accidents cause more accidental deaths than burns. Advances in trauma and burn management over the past three decades have resulted in improved survival and reduced morbidity from major burns. Twenty-five years ago, the mortality rate of a 50% body surface area burn in a young adult was about 50%, despite treatment. Today, that same burn results in less than 10% mortality. Ten years ago, an 80 to 90% body surface area burn yielded 10% survival. Today, over 50% of these patients survive....

Additionally, important general factors in supporting the development of an entrepreneurial society are positive entrepreneurial personal role models for individuals to follow, entrepreneurial attitudes among all relevant stakeholders, local empowerment, a greater belief in ‘trust’ than in regulations and the encouragement of initiative at all levels. The education system is commonly regarded as the starting point for the creation of enterprise culture.

  • Solid Tumors Small-molecule epidermal growth factor (EGF) antagonists act at the ATP binding site of the EGF receptor tyrosine kinase. In early clinical trials, gefitinib showed evidence of responses in a small fraction of patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Side effects were generally acceptable, consisting mostly of rash and diarrhea. Gefitinib was found to have antitumor activity mainly in the subset of patients with tumors containing activating mutations in the EGF receptor.

  • Antibodies In general, antibodies are not very effective at killing cancer cells. Because the tumor seems to influence the host toward making antibodies rather than generating cellular immunity, it is inferred that antibodies are easier for the tumor to fend off. Many patients can be shown to have serum antibodies directed at their tumors, but these do not appear to influence disease progression. However, the ability to grow very large quantities of high-affinity antibody directed at a tumor by the hybridoma technique has led to the application of antibodies to the treatment of cancer.

  • To begin, at the left of the figure, trends in risk factors or biological markers such as cholesterol and other lipids, weight, and indicators of insulin regulation are separate markers of underlying health and population propensity to disease. At the population level, the age of onset of these factors generally precedes the onset of related diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The second box includes diseases, conditions, and impairments.

  • Although modern science has made some major strides in understanding cancer and its molecular basis, the knowledge about how to prevent or treat cancer is still lagging behind. Although interruption of a cell signaling pathway, also called monotherapy, has been the paradigm approach until now, experience in the last few years has revealed that multitargeted therapy has a better chance for success. Modern medicine is evidence based and practices the use of a discrete, well-defined chemical entity for the treatment of given diseases.

  • In addition to incidence figures, population-based cancer registries that conduct adequate follow-up of their patients are able to estimate the preva- lence of cancer. Prevalence figures give an indication of the burden of the dis- ease in the community. Cancer registries generally assume that once diag- nosed with cancer, an individual remains a prevalent case until death. Thus, prevalence may be estimated from data on incidence and survival.

  • During the past twenty-five years I have been engaged in the practical work of ministering to the needs of the insane. This work has resulted in a gradual development of that form of treatment which has been designated as "The Hospital Idea". In other words, the asylum has given place to the hospital in the protection and restoration of mental invalids. The fact is now generally recognized that the insane man is a sick man, and needs for his comfort and cure the application of such means as are ordinarily used for the benefit of the sick in a modern general hospital. Acting under this...

  • Unification of disjunctive feature descriptions is important for efficient unification-based parsing. This paper presents constraint projection, a new method for unification of disjunctive feature structures represented by logical constraints. Constraint projection is a generalization of constraint unification, and is more efficient because constraint projection has a mechanism for abandoning information irrelevant to a goal specified by a list of variables. These works are based on graph unification rather than on term unification.

  • The interpretation of coercion constructions (to begin a book) has been recently considered as resulting from the operation of type changing. For instance, a phrase of type o (object) is coerced to a phrase of type e (event) under the influence of the predicate. We show that this procedure encounters empirical difficulties. Focussing on the begin/commencer case, we show that the coercion interpretation results both from general semantic processes and properties of the predicate, and we argue that it is best represented at the lexical level. ...
