  • Leaf explants of Echinacea purpurea L. taken from aseptically germinated seedlings were inoculated with A. tumefaciens strains EHA105, carrying a binary vector conferring herbicide resistant bar gene and fungal resistant chitinase gene. Glufosinate ammonium‐resistant shoots were regenerated on a medium containing BAP and NAA at a concentration of 4.88 and 0.053 μM, respectively. A subsequent transfer of shoots to medium containing BAP was necessary for stem elongation and leaf development.

  • 4-Hydroxy-2-trans-nonenal (4-HNE), one of the major end products of lipid peroxidation, has been shown to induce apoptosis in a variety of cell lines. It appears to modulate signalingprocesses inmore thanonewaybecause it has been suggested to have a role in signaling for differentiation and proliferation. We showfor the first time that incorporation of 4-HNE-metabolizing glutathioneS-transferase (GST) isozyme, hGSTA4-4, into adherent cell lines HLE B-3 and CCL-75, by either cDNA transfection or microinjection of active enzyme, leads to their transformation. ...

  • The diversity and specialization in orchid floral morphology have fascinated botanists and collectors for centuries. In the past 10 years, the orchid industry has been growing substantially worldwide. This interesting book focuses on the recent advances in orchid biotechnology research since the last 10 years in Taiwan. To advance the orchid industry, enhancement of basic research as well as advanced biotechnology will provide a good platform to improve the flower quality and breeding of new varieties.

  • Learning how to write a coherent, effective text is a difficult and protracted achievement of cognitive development that contrasts sharply with the acquisition of speech. By the age of 5, spoken language is normally highly developed with a working vocabulary of several thousand words and an ability to comprehend and produce grammatical sentences. Although the specific contribution of a genetic predisposition for language learning is unsettled, it is apparent that speech acquisition is a natural part of early human development.

  • Colin Munro MacLeod is recognized as one of the founders of molecular biology for his research concerning the role of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in bacteria. Along with his colleagues Oswald Avery and Maclyn McCarty, MacLeod conducted experiments on bacterial transformation which indicated that DNA was the active agent in the genetic transformation of bacterial cells. His earlier research focused on the causes of pneumonia and the development of serums to treat it.

  • Compared to other ecosystems, wetlands have received an exceptional amount of attention. Wetlands are valuable as sources, sink and transformers of a multitude of chemical, biological and genetic materials. They stabilize water supplies, clean polluted waters, protect shorelines, and recharge groundwater aquifers. They have increasingly become recognized for their unique ecological functions in the environment and are the focus of increased research by scientists and study programs by schools, communities, and nature centers.

  • SPB2 2/27/2003 4:06 PM Page 35 2 Plant tissue culture Introduction Most methods of plant transformation applied to GM crops require that a whole plant is regenerated from isolated plant cells or tissue which have been genetically transformed. This regeneration is conducted in vitro so that the environment and growth medium can be manipulated to ensure a high frequency of regeneration. In addition to a high frequency of regeneration, the regenerable cells must be accessible to gene transfer by whatever technique is chosen (gene transfer methods are described in Chapter 3).

  • By playing a role in the near-annihilation of a species, Theodore Roosevelt, the president of the United States at the turn of the twentieth century, unwittingly laid the groundwork for the most dramatic triumph yet in the use of artificial insemination (AI) to rescue a species from extinction. In the early 1900s, waves of immigrants from Europe settled in the American Midwest. As humans transformed the land, they declared war on a perceived pest: the prairie dog.

  • The shifting market trends posed a significant challenge to De Beers’ preeminent position. Throughout the 1990s, the company’s inventories increased while its sales remained flat. To address this issue De Beers chose a transformational strategy: instead of maintaining its long-standing role as steward of the entire industry, it would become a leader in driving consumer demand. One of the key elements of that transformation was a program called Supplier of Choice. Launched in 2003, the program aimed to shift some of the responsibility for marketing to other players in the industry.

  • Plants that have features and characteristics of other species, other genera, other families and even other kingdoms - such as bacteria and mammals - have fascinated man since the dawn of history. Such phenomena, recorded in several mythologies, were in the realm of miracles and the work of God. Now they seem to become realities, though not exactly as described in the ancient folklore.

  • The analysis by Tirole (2008) of maturity transformation by financial intermediaries such as pension funds and insurance companies which have (uncertain) long-term liabilities (and assets of a shorter maturity) carries this Keynesian tradition further. In the presence of macroeconomic shocks that affect everybody simultaneously, he argues, private sector assets are not useful. Instead what is needed is an external risk-free store of value such as government bonds.

  • The third model is constructed by CIBC, following their usual data mining procedure for a direct marketing campaign. The modeller at CIBC trained the model, and then passed on to us the validation result. The supervised learning algorithm of their choice is linear logistic regression. A considerable amount of time is spent on data preparation, including variable selection, variable transformation, and variable imputation. The first step in their modelling procedure is to significantly reduce the number of input variables by performing exploratory analysis on the data.

  • Our study assessed the opportunity for library space saving and cost avoidance through the systematic and intentional outsourcing of local management operations for digitized books to shared service providers and progressive downsizing of local print collections in favor of negotiated access to the digitized corpus and regionally consolidated print inventory. As detailed in the report that follows, the organizational change required to achieve these gains is likely to be substantial and challenging to implement.
