  • The sequencing of the human genome has generated excitement about the potential of genomic innovations to improve medical care, preventive and community health services, and public health. Until fairly recently, genetic information was used primarily in the diagnosis of relatively rare genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis and Huntington’s Disease, but a transformation in the use of genetic and genomic information is under way. Genetic markers of increased risk for such chronic diseases as diabetes and coronary artery disease have been identified.

  • Controlling the impact of stress on brewing biomass, predicting yeast activity and ensuring consistent fermentation performance through successive fermentations remain areas of active interest for the brewing industry. To be able to control and perhaps even manipulate yeast activity, it is necessary to identify factors that affect its functionality during fermentation. Genetic stability and integrity are crucial to maintaining predictable performance.

  • Our results suggest that both monetary policy and capital inows shocks have a signicant and positive effect on house prices, credit to the private sector and residential investment. The effects of both shocks are greater in countries with a higher degree of mortgage market development, with the effect of monetary policy shocks roughly doubling. This suggests that excessive nancial innovation may act as a propagation mechanism. The existence of mortgage-backed securities has a much larger effect on the transmission of capital inows shocks.

  • Yet, despite progress in the identification of problems and the development of improved methodologies -- and the possibility of regulatory initiatives that feature mandated environmental accounting -- the field lacks a methodology for evaluating the social and private benefits of improved environmental accounting. Whether regulators continue to motivate EA indirectly via outreach to the private sector, or more directly via incentives such as tax breaks or mandates, private sector resources and regulatory attention should be focused on initiatives that promise the greatest benefit.

  • “Workers’ Compensation Costs” (WC) ranks as the 10th most important problem in this survey, down from its 3rd position in the 2004 survey. About one-quarter of business own- ers regard WC costs as critical, one-third lower than four years ago. In some states, such as Arizona and California, WC systems have been reformed and rates lowered. Also, safer work- places due to improved working environments and a shift in the employment base from more hazardous manufacturing jobs to relatively safe service positions contribute to lower rates.

  • Liquid Robotics’ chief of innovative applications, Edward Lu, a former astronaut, often remarks that we know more about outer space than we do about the oceans on which most of life on Earth depends for survival. The company’s Wave Glider, which looks like a surf board packed with instruments, is trying to change that. Company founder Roger Hine got the idea when an investor asked him how he would track the migratory routes of humpback whales. The gliders, which rely on wave motion to maintain a speed of around 1.5 knots and count on solar energy to power transmitters that...
