Changes in the pattern of DNA methylation are commonly seen in human tumors.
Both genome wide hypomethylation (insufficient methylation) and region-specific
hypermethylation (excessive methylation) have been suggested to play a role in
carcinogenesis2. A common cause of the loss of tumor-suppressor miRNAs in cancer is
the silencing of primary transcripts by CpG island promoter by hypermethylation3.
The inverted repeats present in a genome play dual roles. They can induce
genomic instability and, on the other hand, regulate gene expression. In the
present study, we report the distribution and sequence features of recombi-nogenic long inverted repeats (LIRs) that are capable of forming stable
stem-loops or palindromes within the human genome.
Understanding the biological basis of aging has fascinated people throughout
recorded history, and is one of the great remaining scientific questions. The question
has never been more important than now, as we anticipate the impact that a
rapidly growing older population will have on the social, political, and medical
landscape over the next 50 years. There is increasing evidence that aging involves
