German case syncretism is often assumed to be the accidental by-product of historical development. This paper contradicts this claim and argues that the evolution of German case is driven by the need to optimize the cognitive effort and memory required for processing and interpretation. This hypothesis is supported by a novel kind of computational experiments that reconstruct and compare attested variations of the German definite article paradigm.
We present an unsupervised system that exploits linguistic knowledge resources, namely English and German lexical databases and the World Wide Web, to identify English inclusions in German text. We describe experiments with this system and the corpus which was developed for this task. We report the classification results of our system and compare them to the performance of a trained machine learner in a series of in- and crossdomain experiments.
The choice of verb features is crucial for the learning of verb classes. This paper presents clustering experiments on 168 German verbs, which explore the relevance of features on three levels of verb description, purely syntactic frame types, prepositional phrase information and selectional preferences. In contrast to previous approaches concentrating on the sparse data problem, we present evidence for a linguistically defined limit on the usefulness of features which is driven by the idiosyncratic properties of the verbs and the specific attributes of the desired verb classification. ...
We investigate the factors which determine constituent order in German clauses and propose an algorithm which performs the task in two steps: First, the best candidate for the initial sentence position is chosen. Then, the order for the remaining constituents is determined. The first task is more difficult than the second one because of properties of the German sentence-initial position. Experiments show a significant improvement over competing approaches. Our algorithm is also more efficient than these. ...
This paper presents a novel ensemble learning approach to resolving German pronouns. Boosting, the method in question, combines the moderately accurate hypotheses of several classifiers to form a highly accurate one. Experiments show that this approach is superior to a single decision-tree classifier. Furthermore, we present a standalone system that resolves pronouns in unannotated text by using a fully automatic sequence of preprocessing modules that mimics the manual annotation process.
We describe the ongoing construction of a large, semantically annotated corpus resource as reliable basis for the largescale acquisition of word-semantic information, e.g. the construction of domainindependent lexica. The backbone of the annotation are semantic roles in the frame semantics paradigm. We report experiences and evaluate the annotated data from the first project stage. On this basis, we discuss the problems of vagueness and ambiguity in semantic annotation.
The paper describes ongoing work on the evaluation of methods for extracting collocation candidates from large text corpora. Our research is based on a German treebank corpus used as gold standard. Results are available for adjective+noun pairs, which proved to be a comparatively easy extraction task. We plan to extend the evaluation to other types of collocations (e.g., PP+verb pairs).
English is the reincarnation of a common language of the people like Angle, Saxon and Jute - often referred to as the Anglo-Saxon. Three people like this ethnic German, who lived in what is now northern Germany and the Netherlands, but some are king Vortigern invited to England in the mid 5th century to help him in the war against the indigenous Pict (now no longer).
English is a language of the western branch of the German language group in the Indo-European), were imported to England by the language invasion of many people in the 6th century. Transmitted throughout the English colonialism in the boom period of the British Empire, from the British Isles through Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, the United States and some English becomes "sub-language" most important and increasingly more people learn to use.
English experience has a lot of capital and has been published in many different books. However, learning experience over the internet is not everyone already know. I hope this article helps you learn more effective online learning and learning styles are like nature of this age.
This collection of articles on the business cycle, money,
and exchange rates by Ludwig von Mises appeared
between 1919 and1946. Here we have the evidence that
the master economist foresaw and warned against the breakdown
of the German mark, as well as the market crash of 1929
and the depression that followed.
The most established nationwide medical registry in Germany is the Perinatal Registry, which collects
maternal health records concerning pregnancy, delivery and perinatal outcome from now more than
1100 hospitals. Over the past 16 years, data collection was transformed from printed questionnaires to
digital records. A special web-based information source of the German Perinatal Registry does not
This book is the outcome of a comparative survey in China and Vietnam. Until
now there has been no such study concerning itself with entrepreneurial strata
and the private sector in both those countries. What is more, comparisons of the
current developments in the two countries are rare. This study is based on the
results of a research project that was supported between 1996 and 1998 by the
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation).
The present volume is a study of industry and trade; with special reference to the technical
evolution of industry, and its influences on the conditions of man’s life and work. It is
designed to be followed by a companion volume, which is to bo occupied with influences
on those conditions exerted by the resources available for employment; by money
and credit; by international trade; and by social endeavour.
Parents and children need a framework for care which provides
continuity from pre-pregnancy, through pregnancy and childbirth, to
the early years of life. A comprehensive approach to early life is needed
which builds on existing programmes to ensure our children get the
best start in life8. Midwives have a key role in ensuring that their
contribution integrates with the roles of other professionals and
agencies working in collaboration with maternity services.
Stability Bonds must not lead to a reduction in budgetary discipline among euro-area
Member States. A notable feature of the period since the launch of the euro has been
inconsistency in market discipline of budgetary policy in the participating Member States.
The high degree of convergence in euro-area bond yields during the first decade of the euro
was not, in retrospect, justified by the budgetary performance of the Member States. The
correction since 2009 has been abrupt, with possibly some degree of overshooting.
In the following pages it has been my endeavor to present, first, the results of a careful and impartial
investigation into the present and prospective status of the monopolies in every industry; and, second, to
discuss in all fairness the questions in regard to these monopolies--their cause, growth, future prospects, evils,
and remedies--which every thinking man is to-day asking.
Given these ideological premises it is no surprise that the avant-garde film-
makers mentioned above were deeply involved in establishing a modernist
tradition of advertisement that relied on purely or at least heavily abstracted
patterns. From the early 1910s the German film producer Julius Pinschewer
sought to establish new forms of expression in advertisement and succeeded
in collaborating with some of the most innovative film technicians and film-
Similarly, the reverse movement represents a decrease in demand. The beauty of the
connection between demand and marginal value is that an increase in demand could in
principle have meant either more units demanded at a given price, or a higher
willingness to pay for each unit, but those are in fact the same concept – both create a
movement up and to the right.
For many goods, an increase in income increases the demand for the good. Porsche
automobiles, yachts, and Beverly Hills homes are mostly purchased by people with high
incomes. Few billionaires...
