However, most of these models are built with only local context and one representation per word. This is problematic because words are often polysemous and global context can also provide useful information for learning word meanings.

We discuss some of the structural descriptions that GIGs can generate compared with those generated by LIGs. We show also how GIGs can represent structural descriptions corresponding to HPSGs (Pollard and Sag, 1994) schemas.

  • Aligning sentences belonging to comparable monolingual corpora has been suggested as a first step towards training text rewriting algorithms, for tasks such as summarization or paraphrasing. We present here a new monolingual sentence alignment algorithm, combining a sentence-based TF*IDF score, turned into a probability distribution using logistic regression, with a global alignment dynamic programming algorithm. Our approach provides a simpler and more robust solution achieving a substantial improvement in accuracy over existing systems. ...

  • Even if socially responsible investment does not impose a cost on SRI fund investors in terms of reduced before-fee financial performance, these investors could still pay an explicit price for their funds' social responsibility in the form of higher fees. Indeed, there are reasons to expect fees charged by SRI funds to be higher. First, some SRI funds actively engage with the firms in which they invest to encourage them to pursue socially responsible policies. The costs of such active monitoring may be partly passed on to investors in the form of higher expenses.

  • Analyzing monthly return data on more than 2500 unique U.S. equity funds over the period 1984–2003, we show that the average return gap is close to zero. In particular, the equally weighted return gap for all mutual funds in our sample equals 1.1 basis points per month, while the value- weighted return gap equals −1.0 basis points per month. These results indicate that the magnitude of unobserved actions is relatively small in the aggregate. Thus, fund managers’ trades in the aggregate create sufficient value to offset trading costs and other hidden costs of fund management.
