Globalization magnifies opportunity and risk. It opens up new markets and creates opportunities for innovation. And it provides access to new sources of capital and wider pools of skilled employees. However, daily deaths of children as a result of hunger, disease and malnutrition on a massive scale in Africa, and elsewhere, is not fiction....

  • Most implementations of critical Internet protocols are written in type-unsafe languages such as C or C++ and are regularly vulnerable to serious security and reliability problems. Type-safe languages eliminate many errors but are not used to due to the perceived performance overheads. We combine two techniques to eliminate this performance penalty in a practical fashion: strong static typing and generative metaprogramming. Static typing eliminates run-time type information by checking safety at compile-time and minimises dynamic checks.

  • We measure the impact of unobserved actions by comparing the actual mutual fund performancewith the performance of a hypothetical portfolio that invests in the previously disclosed fund holdings. We term this return difference the return gap. The impact of unobserved actions is included in the investor return but not in the return of the hypothetical portfolio. For example, commissions paid by mutual funds to their brokers or stale-price arbitrage losses do not directly affect the returns of the holdings, but they do adversely affect the returns to investors.

  • Each function in MATLAB contains a set of variables specific to that function. Even in the same .m file, you don’t have (direct) access to variables created in other functions within the file. Global variables give you the ability to create/change a variable in one function and have that updated variable accessible elsewhere. This post will discuss two methods for handling (no pun intended) global variables, one of which is perfectly integrated into Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs).
