may be dated. For example, a question may refer to a rapidly changing technology in a way that was
correct in the 1980s and early 1990s, but not now. In addition, Educational Testing Service® ETS® has
revised and updated its standards and guidelines for test questions so some questions may not meet

A reliable indicator of candidate proficiency
in critical thinking and analytical writing
Graduate schools are now able to receive valuable information that can
be factored into admissions decisions: applicants’ scores on the
GRE Writing Assessment. Since October 1999, examinees have had
the opportunity to demonstrate, in a controlled testing situation, the
kinds of high-level thinking and writing skills generally recognized
as essential for success in many graduate programs.
The “Present Your Perspective on an Issue” section of the test assesses your ability to think critically
about a topic of general interest and to clearly express your thoughts about it in writing. Each topic,
presented in quotation marks, makes a claim about an issue that test takers can discuss from various
perspectives and apply to many different situations or conditions. Your task is to present a compelling
case for your own position on the issue. The best approach to this task is read the topic carefully.
When you take the analytical writing section of the GRE General Test, you will be presented with two
Issue topics from this pool. Because the wording of some topics in the test might vary slightly from
what is presented here, you should read your test topics carefully and respond to the wording as it
appears in the actual test.
The GRE Analytical Writing Measure (AWM) is comprised of two essays: a 45-minute
“Present Your Perspective on an Issue” and a 30-minute “Analyze an Argument.” The
first essay requires that the test taker construct his/her own argument by taking a position
on an issue (students will be able to choose one of two issues from which to write this
essay). The second essay requires the test taker to critique another person’s argument
(only one argument prompt will be provided).

The GRE Subject Tests are designed to help graduate
school admission committees and fellowship sponsors
assess the qualifications of applicants in specific fields
of study. The tests also provide you with an assessment
of your own qualifications.
Scores on the tests are intended to indicate
knowledge of the subject matter emphasized in many
undergraduate programs as preparation for graduate
study. Because past achievement is usually a good
indicator of future performance, the scores are helpful
in predicting success in graduate study.
