The guests of the queen will enjoy to-night a rich and costly feast. Every thing wore the gay and festive appearance which, in the good old times, the king's palace in Berlin had been wont to exhibit.

  • Whether you can accomplish a specific goal or meet a specific deadline depends first on how much time you need to get the job done. What should you do when the demands of the job exceed the time you have available? The best approach is to divide the project into smaller pieces. Different goals will have to be divided in different ways, but one seemingly unrealistic goal can often be accomplished by working on several smaller, more reasonable goals.

These structures constitute the great majority of bridges and are often referred to as “workhorse” bridges. The Sourcebook begins by explaining why it is necessary for engineers to consider bridge aesthetics. It then provides practical, easy-to-apply ideas for design engineers to use in developing elegant designs for the typical bridges on which they work every day.

  • I am enormously grateful to all of authors who have contributed to this volume on gas– liquid foam. One of the great pleasures of working with such accomplished scientists and engineers from industry and academia is that everybody has known the level at which to pitch their contributions. Special thanks are due to Laurie Schramm who, along with co-authors, has contributed two chapters on foams in enhanced oil recovery and flotation of oil sands, and to Thomas Martin who endured initial confusion upon my part to produce a first class chapter on firefighting foams....

  • Stabilization Programs, Monetary Policy and Exchange Rate Movements in Emerging Markets Economies I use a unique data set consisting of observations on more than 300,000 metropolitan SAT takers from the 1994 cohort, matched to the high schools that students attended. The size of this sample permits accurate estimation of both peer quality and average performance for the great majority of high schools in each of 177 metropolitan housing markets. I find no evidence that the association between peer group and student performance is stronger in high-choice than in low-choice markets....

  • Moreover, bond prices were strongly influenced by the presence of information asymmetries in the market. Most bondholders were poorly informed of the possibil- ities that bonds represent, how they can be traded, and what kinds of risk they carry. At the beginning of trading, a great majority of bondholders believed bonds to be liable to default risk, which, from their perspective, significantly reduced bond price. Serbia’s old saving bonds are discount types of bonds. They bear a 2% annual interest rate (rolled in interest rate) that is paid at the time of maturity.

At five feet eight inches and 140 pounds, I was the smallest guy at the Tulane University tryouts. Yet I persevered, creating a strategic plan of rigorous exercise and nutrition and developing an attitude that said, “Never give up.” I ended up being the smallest guy on the team and the smallest player in the country, but I earned my varsity letter.

  • A WELL-KNOWN New York millionaire gave it as his opinion not long ago that any young man possessing a good constitution and a fair degree of intelligence might acquire riches. The statement was criticised--literally picked to pieces--and finally adjudged as being extravagant. The figures then came out, gathered by a careful statistician, that of the young men in business in New York City, sixty per cent, were earning less than $1,000 per year, only twenty per cent, had an income of $2,000, and barely five per cent, commanded salaries in excess of the latter figure.
