  • The environmental legislation contained in the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 set the stage for green chemistry. Environmental concerns in research and industry are increasing with more and more pressure to reduce the number of pollutants produced. Green chemistry, environmentally benign chemistry and sustainable chemistry involve the design of chemical products and processes that eliminates the use and generation of hazardous substances.

  • Since the establishment of the conductive properties of intrinsic conductive polymers, a huge variety of basic and applied research has been carried out, involving different polymers, copolymers, blends, mixtures and composites. Thus, fundamental understanding of physical and chemical properties of these materials has been sought, while the applied aspects have advanced very rapidly, crossing the boundaries between disciplines. Today, the applications of conducting polymers in various fields such as neuroscience, nanotechnology and green chemistry, are easily found.

  • This book is part of the Green Chemistry series published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and is designed to provide a modern overview of the current status of insecticides. We present the current approaches for insect pest control as green alternatives to classical agrochemicals, which should be of interest to a vast group of researchers: agrochemists, biochemists, chemists, toxicologists, etc. Throughout the book, the different approaches to pest control which involve ‘‘greener chemicals’’ in particular are emphasized.

  • Awareness of issues related to the environment—the need to conserve, the need for pollution minimization, the need to design for the future—have become part of the social dialog. It is seen in advertising: “green” in car commercials. It is seen at the grocery store: “paper or plastic?” It is seen in our personal energy use: “Do you choose the company that gets part of its electricity from renewable sources or standard resources?” It is part of the voting platforms—balancing the needs of having national parks with exploration and utilization of resources....

  • Photosynthesis of micro algae is often inhibited by salt stress (Kirst, 1990). Such an inhibition may be explained by a decrease in PSII activity. Indeed, in the green microalgae, salt stress inhibits PSII activity in Dunaliella tertiolecta and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii that is associated with a state-2 transition (Gilmour et al., 1985, Endo et al., 1995). In the cyanobacteria, it has been suggested that the decreased PSII activity in salt-stressed cells is associated with the state-2 transition (Schubert et al., 1993; Schubert and Hagemann, 1990).

  • Colours! The most beautiful of buds – an apple bud in my garden changes colour from red to rosy after a few days. Why? It then explodes into a beautiful pale rosy flower. After a few months what was once a flower looks completely different: it has become a big, round and red apple. Look at the apple skin. It is pale green, but moving along its surface the colour changes quite abruptly to an extraordinary vibrant red. The apple looks quite different when lit by full sunlight, or when placed in the shade....

  • You probably didn't know that Scot and Monalisa did a love-scene together, did you? It was over fifty years ago, when they were both teen heart-throbs, and they were co-stars in a genuinely terrible straight-to-net film called No Hope, about a pair of clean cut youngsters who fall in love despite their class differences. It was a real weeper, and the supporting appearances in roles as dad, mum, best mate, priest, teacher, etc, were so forgettable that they could probably be used as treatment for erasing traumatic memories.

  • The sample extraction and concentration steps in this method are essentially the same as in Methods 606, 608, 609, and 612. Thus, a single sample may be extracted to measure the parameters included in the scope of each of these methods. When cleanup is required, the concentration levels must be high enough to permit selecting aliquots, as necessary, to apply appropriate cleanup procedures. The analyst is allowed the latitude, under Section 12, to select chromatographic conditions appropriate for the simultaneous measurement of combinations of these parameters....

  • Ancient Hebrew and Christian tradition relates that the universe was created in six days, following which there was a day of rest. What the old chronicles never recorded was that, on the eighth day, the Creator must have dropped back into the lab to do some tidying up. Only then, coming across his rough notes for Maxwell’s and the acoustic wave equations, did the thought occur that the creation of light and sound could be logically extrapolated to x-rays and ultrasound.

  • The authors and publisher are pleased to present the twentyeighth edition of Harper’s Illustrated Biochemistry. This edition features for the first time multiple color images, many entirely new, that vividly emphasize the ever-increasing complexity of biochemical knowledge. The cover picture of green fluorescent protein (GFP), which recognizes the award of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Martin Chalfie, Roger Y. Tsien, and Osamu Shimomura, reflects the book’s emphasis on new developments.
