  • Herbert Marcuse’s Negations is both a radical critique of capitalist modernity and a model of materialist dialectical thinking. In a series of essays, originally written in the period stretching from the 1930s to 1960s, Marcuse takes up the presupposed categories that have, and continue to, ground thought and action in our

  • The name of this book is Power Quality, but the title could very well be The Power Quality Do-It-Yourself Book . When I set out to write this book, I wanted it to be user friendly, easy to understand, and easy to apply in solving electrical power system problems that engineers and technicians confront on a daily basis. As an electrical engineer dealing with power system quality concerns, many of the books I consulted lacked direct and precise information and required a very thorough search to find what I needed.

  • For the earthquake motion level 1, the elastic limit the value of a structure is usually adopted seismic activity. For Level 2 earthquake motion, on the other hand, the limit value that a structure does not collapse or repair through the seismic activity depends on the importance of intended structure. Level 2 earthquake motions are used for verification is based on the records of strong motion seismograms obtained from the Hyogoken Nanbu earthquake and the other, and seismic waveform types are assigned according to the ground....

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility Engineering started out being a third edition to my previous book Noise Reduction Techniques in Electronic Systems, but it turned out to be much more than that, hence, the title change. Nine of the original twelve chapters were completely rewritten. In addition, there are six new chapters, plus two new appendices, with over 600 pages of new and revised material (including 342 new figures).

  • causing a voltage sag with duration of more than 1 cycle occurs within the area of vulnerability. However, faults outside this area will not cause the voltage to drop below 0.5 pu. The same discussion applies to the area of vulnerability for ASD loads. The less sensitive the equipment, the smaller the area of vulnerability will be (and the fewer times sags will cause the equipment to misoperate). The voltage sag performance for a given customer facility will depend on whether the customer is supplied from the transmission system or from the distribution system.

  • Work on Deisboeck and Kresh's Complex Systems Science in BioMedicine started years ago. In fact, thoughts and ideas leading up to this textbook date back to our first conversation, sometime in the fall of 1996. We quickly found common ground, and talked about emergence and self-organization and their relevance for medicine. We were both fascinated by the idea of complexity and marveled about its tremendous possibilities for cancer research, which was then and still is Tom's main scientific interest. Much has happened in science and technology since we first discussed our vision.

  • The purpose of this monograph is to formulate a quantitative and self-consistent theoretical approach to wave–particle interactions occurring in space plasmas, and present a logical development of the subject. In the Earth’s magnetosphere, Nature has given us a plasma laboratory that is accessible to observations made by radio, magnetic and electric instruments on the ground, and a great variety of instruments aboard rockets and Earth-orbiting satellites. Spacecraft are making similar observations in the more distant solar system.

  • Unlike stratospheric ozone that protects life on earth, tropospheric ozone is highly toxic and is the main pollutant of the atmosphere of industrialized countries and cities. Its precursors are emanated from industrial activities and traffic. Generated by lightning, photochemical reactions or with free radicals, it has a density of 1.66 times greater than air and is maintained close to the ground. It decomposes easily, generating free radicals with oxidizing power. The main primary pollutants leading to ozone formation are nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and methane.

  • Our estimated results are therefore consistent and free frombias. Fourth,we investigate the impact of amore comprehensive set of demographic factors on pollution including the age composition, the urbanization rate and the average household size. Many existing econometric studies neglect demographic factors other than total population size. Parikh and Shukla’s (1995) analysis of the effect of the urbanization rate on energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries represents a notable exception in this regard....

  • Chemical reactions take place due to the redistribution of electron density among the reacting partners. Focusing on changes in electron density, which accompany the breaking and forming of chemical bonds, instead of the changes in the wave function accompanying them, allows us to use the ‘‘classical’’ three-dimensional language. Conceptual density functional theory (DFT) quantifies the possible responses of the system to various changes in density.

  • The study of DNA advanced human knowledge in a way comparable to the major theories in physics, surpassed only by discoveries such as fire or the number zero. However, it also created conceptual shortcuts, beliefs and misunderstandings that obscure the natural phenomena, hindering its better understanding. The deep conviction that no human knowledge is perfect, but only perfectible, should function as a fair safeguard against scientific dogmatism and enable open discussion. With this aim, this book will offer to its readers 30 chapters on current trends in the field of DNA replication.

  • This book is structured in three parts. In Part I, we aim to sensitise you, the reader, to the complex issues that challenge qualitative researchers at the planning stage of their projects. In Part II, the challenge of using different methodologies in practice is critically explored by 15 authors who share their individual research experiences. Part III examines the choices we make when we evaluate and present research. We hope you will find this book both exciting and helpful. Inevitably, there are many gaps in terms of topics and issues covered, and methodologies represented.

  • In this chapter, we first motivate the discussion by illustrating the potential gains from simple diversification into many assets. We then proceed to examine the process of efficient diversification from the ground up, starting with an investment menu of only two risky assets, then adding the risk-free asset, and finally, incorporating the entire universe of available risky securities. We learn how diversification can reduce risk without affecting expected returns.
