  • A book emerges as an author attempts to meet the challenges of life. This book takes root in many contextual patterns but two are of particular note. The first concerns my experiences at the University of Michigan. During the past few years at the Michigan Business School, I have been involved in a movement. My colleagues Kim Cameron, Jane Dutton, and Gretchen Spreitzer and I have been facilitating the emergence of a new field that we call positive organizational scholarship.

  • The Army’s strategic vision calls for transformation to a full-spectrum Objective Force that can project overwhelming military power anywhere in the world on extremely short notice. It must be agile, versatile, and lethal, achieving its objectives through the application of dominant maneuver, precision engagement, focused logistics, information superiority, and highly survivable combat systems.

  • Work on Deisboeck and Kresh's Complex Systems Science in BioMedicine started years ago. In fact, thoughts and ideas leading up to this textbook date back to our first conversation, sometime in the fall of 1996. We quickly found common ground, and talked about emergence and self-organization and their relevance for medicine. We were both fascinated by the idea of complexity and marveled about its tremendous possibilities for cancer research, which was then and still is Tom's main scientific interest. Much has happened in science and technology since we first discussed our vision.

  • Methanol: Short-term inhalation of methanol is linked to motor dysfunctions and visual disturbances such as blurred vision leading to blindness. Long-term exposure can result in headaches, insomnia and visual disturbances. There is no evidence linking exposure to methanol and cancer. Toluene, xylenes, MEK, MIBK and methanol also are classified as VOCs. Once released to the atmosphere, VOCs react with nitrogen oxides and sunlight to form ground-level ozone.

  • In its fifth edition, Cancer Medicine has been named eponymously to honor its founding editors James F. Holland and Emil Frei III, two giants of medical oncology. The Holland-Frei Cancer Medicine reflects their dedication to innovative, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary care of cancer patients, as well as their belief in the importance of grounding such care in a more fundamental understanding of cancer biology. It is to their vision and the example that they have established over the last four decades that this book is dedicated.

  • The Semantic Web [22] holds out a different vision, that of information laid bare so that it can be collected, manipulated, and annotated independent of its location or presentation format- ting. While the Semantic Web promises much more effective access to information, it has faced a chicken-and-egg problem getting off the ground. Without substantial quantities of data avail- able in Semantic Web form, users cannot benefit from tools that work directly with information rather than pages, and Semantic Web-based software agents have little data to show their useful- ness.

  • Gustavo Ghidini has an excellent grasp of both the principles and the many specific provisions underlying intellectual property law in Italy and Europe. Nevertheless, he is neither a dogmatist nor an exegete immersed within the horizon of the texts he reads. He has a powerful vision of the politics of law, regularly setting it out in his premises and grounding it in his interpretation of current principles, which he justifies.

  • Our research aims at building computational models of word meaning that are perceptually grounded. Using computer vision techniques, we build visual and multimodal distributional models and compare them to standard textual models. Our results show that, while visual models with state-of-the-art computer vision techniques perform worse than textual models in general tasks (accounting for semantic relatedness), they are as good or better models of the meaning of words with visual correlates such as color terms, even in a nontrivial task that involves nonliteral uses of such words. ...

  • In vision, it is sometimes possible to design networks from a task analysis of ~he problem, aided by the homogeneity of the domain. For example, Sejnowski & Hinton (1986) designed a network that can separate figure from ground for shapes with incomplete bounding contours. Constructing a network is much more difficult in an inhomogeneous domain like natural language. This problem has been partially overcome by the discovery of powerful learning algorithms that allow the strengths of connection in a network to be shaped by experience; ...
