  • Difficulty in accessing ground water without disturbing ground-water flow patterns, chemistry, microbiology, and the physical and chemical makeup of formation materials has made accurate characterization of in situ ground-water conditions a very challenging task.

  • The use of models to provide additional details on contaminant fate and transport has rapidly increased in the past 3 decades. The increasing global recognition of the potential risks associated with surface water or ground water contamination and speciÞc environmental regulations implemented after 1980 have demanded a more accurate understanding of these risks as they relate to human health and the environment.

  • Programming from the Ground Up is an introduction to programming using assembly language on the Linux platform for x86 machines. It is a great book for novices who are just learning to program as well as for intermediates who have never learned or mastered assembly language programming. It covers many topics skipped by other similar books, including memory management, debugging, interfacing with C, dynamic libraries, and even a bit on GUI programming.

  • This paper uses an unsupervised model of grounded language acquisition to study the role that social cues play in language acquisition. The input to the model consists of (orthographically transcribed) child-directed utterances accompanied by the set of objects present in the non-linguistic context. Each object is annotated by social cues, indicating e.g., whether the caregiver is looking at or touching the object.

  • Air liaison officers (ALOs) play an important interservice role as U.S. Air Force officers collocated with U.S. Army units, providing air-ground support and advising ground commanders on related issues. Under the current system, ALO duty is restricted to career aviators, and this approach seems to meet all the requirements of both services. However, there are compelling reasons for the Air Force to consider a dedicated ALO career field,

  • Learning a semantic lexicon is often an important first step in building a system that learns to interpret the meaning of natural language. It is especially important in language grounding where the training data usually consist of language paired with an ambiguous perceptual context. Recent work by Chen and Mooney (2011) introduced a lexicon learning method that deals with ambiguous relational data by taking intersections of graphs.

  • Grounded language models represent the relationship between words and the non-linguistic context in which they are said. This paper describes how they are learned from large corpora of unlabeled video, and are applied to the task of automatic speech recognition of sports video. Results show that grounded language models improve perplexity and word error rate over text based language models, and further, support video information retrieval better than human generated speech transcriptions.

  • We investigate the verbal and nonverbal means for grounding, and propose a design for embodied conversational agents that relies on both kinds of signals to establish common ground in human-computer interaction. We analyzed eye gaze, head nods and attentional focus in the context of a direction-giving task. The distribution of nonverbal behaviors differed depending on the type of dialogue move being grounded, and the overall pattern reflected a monitoring of lack of negative feedback.

  • This excellent collection of myths and legends in the "oral history" style - either from the mouths of storytellers, or from documents where their words were first captured - presents a wonderful insight into the American Indian spiritual philosophy. The book is neatly organized into chapters from the genesis of the planet and people, through myths and legends emphasizing the social structure, to love stories, warrior myths and on to the final death and afterlife stories.

  • A soft ground condition exists whenever construction loads a cohesive foundation soil beyond its preconsolidation stress, as often occurs with saturated clays and silts having SPT blow counts that are near zero. The paper recommends testing programs, testing methods and data interpretation techniques for developing design parameters for settlement and stability analyses. It hopes to move the state-of-practice closer to the state-of-the-art and thus is intended for geotechnical practitioners and teachers rather than researchers.

While these guidelines apply to the majority of installations, certain electrically harsh environments may require additional precautions. Use these guidelines as a tool for helping avoid potential electromagnetic interference (emi) and transient emi that could cause problems such as “adapter faults, rack faults, communication faults,” etc.

  • The goal of Security Risk Management is to teach you practical techniques that will be used on a daily basis, while also explaining the fundamentals so you understand the rationale behind these practices. Security professionals often fall into the trap of telling the business that they need to fix something, but they can’t explain why. This book will help you to break free from the so-called "best practices" argument by articulating risk exposures in business terms.

  • “Kirk told me I could buy beer at the petrol station,” was the first sentence I heard out of Ben Evans’ mouth. He had come to Crete for an Open Spaces Java conference. I explained that I usually bought petrol at the petrol station, but that there was a shop around the corner that sold beer. Ben looked disappointed. I had lived on this Greek island for five years and had never thought of trying to buy beer at the local BP. I felt a bit like this while reading this book. I consider myself a Java fundi. I have spent the past 15 years programming...
