  • Although the Gulf War lasted but a few days, many combat troops have suffered lingering health problems that they attribute to their wartime service. Their health problems and illnesses have features in common with illnesses suffered by veterans of earlier wars, including the difficulty that their physicians have had in making a diagnosis. As yet, these illnesses remain unexplained by medical science, which has prompted some people to wonder if troops in the Persian Gulf theater were exposed to an agent or combination of agents that caused these illnesses.

  • Social determinants of health have a strong influence on a wide diversity of health endpoints. The same is valid for the field of environmental health, as the exposure to environmental risk factors is also unequally distributed, and this unequal distribution is often related to social characteristics such as income, social status, employment and education, but also non-economic aspects such as gender, age or ethnicity. However, depending on the environmental risk and the “risk group” considered, the magnitude of inequality varies largely.

  • The rules are also flexible for communicating effectively with customers who are blind or have low vision. For example, a restaurant can put its menu on an audio cassette or a waiter can read it to a patron. A sales clerk can find items and read their labels. In more complex transactions where a significant amount of printed information is involved, providing alternate formats will be necessary, unless doing so is an undue burden. For example, when a client who is blind visits his real estate agent to negotiate the sale of a house, all relevant...

  • Unfortunately, to our knowledge, direct estimates of Mexican WTP for reductions in the health endpoints considered in this paper are not yet available. Therefore, we use WTP parameters (for adult respiratory symptom days, adult reduced activity days, asthma attacks, and chronic bronchitis) that are based on U.S. studies. But given that average income adjusted for purchasing power parity is approximately four times as high in the United States as in Mexico, Mexican WTP may be lower than American WTP. Cultural factors may also cause WTP in the two countries to differ.

  • By focusing on the disease endpoint, and how various kinds of diseases are impacted by environmental influences, the analysis forges new ground in an understanding of interactions between environment and health. The estimates, in effect, reflect how much death, illness and disability could realistically be avoided every year as a result of reduced human exposures to environmental hazards. Specifically considered here are "modifiable" environmental factors realistically amenable to change using available technologies, policies, and preventive and public health measures.

  • Pesticide risk assessments cover all endpoints of concern. OPP updates risk assessment methods as science evolves or new information becomes available, and has worked to improve protection of children’s health. There has been an increased emphasis on toxic effects unique to children. OPP requires advanced toxicity testing to assess possible effects on the fetus and developing young, including developmental neurotoxicity and reproductive studies.
