  • Prevention of Gastrointestinal Illness Diarrhea, the leading cause of illness in travelers (Chap. 122), is usually a short-lived, self-limited condition; however, 40% of affected individuals need to alter their scheduled activities, and another 20% are confined to bed. The most important determinant of risk is the destination. Incidence rates per 2-week stay have been reported to be as low as 8% in industrialized countries and as high as 55% in parts of Africa, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia. Infants and young adults are at particularly high risk.

  • According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services (US DHHS), telephonic cessation- counseling services have the potential to reach a large number of smokers. State Quitlines can be resources that provide social and financial support (in the form of pharmacological therapy). Quitlines are staffed by counselors trained to deliver information, advice, support and referrals to tobacco users. Individuals can access tobacco Quitlines in all states by calling1-800-QUIT-NOW, regardless of their geographic location, race/ethnicity, or economic status.

  • In collaboration with the American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA), a web-based survey was sent to nearly half of their national LTC members by Mather Lifeways Institute on Aging in March 2005. There were respondents from 194 of these facilities across 30 states. Half of the respondents were from CCRF, while the other half were from nursing homes. This was done to determine the need for training within the LTC workforce. Questions were aimed at preparedness for public health emergencies, including the threat of bioterrorism (BT).

  • The Basics of Social Marketing was developed under the auspices of the Turning Point Social Marketing National Excellence Collaborative, one of five national collaboratives working to strengthen and transform public health as part of the Turning Point Initiative. Seven states and two national partners participated in this project: Illinois, Ohio, Maine, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
