  • The past few years have seen many books commenting on the failure of mental health services to meet the needs of black and minority ethnic people. Some highlight the effects of racism – especially ‘institutional racism’ –while others emphasise the lack of sensitivity to cultural difference in theways of working, especially the ‘medical model’ of (Western) psychiatry on which services are generally based. Government plans to address the problems top-down appear to try riding both horses, but all too often fall between them or fall off both....

  • This ASTRA network paper examines barriers to accessing reproductive health services and supplies in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The paper finds that reproductive health is not prioritised in government policies: they lack a commitment to recognise reproductive health supplies as an important component of public health and human rights and there is no adequate legislation and policy in this area. Condoms are widely available, but their cost is often high, especially for young people.

In other words, a woman’s health affects every area of her life. Yet for many years, ‘women’s health care’ has meant little more than maternal health services such as care during pregnancy and bir th. • Both Planned Parenthood and the alternative sites we interviewed typically had relationships with other local health care providers. Thus, changes that affect one set of clinics, like Planned Parenthood, may have repercussions for other providers in the communities. Clinics often refer patients for care at other facilities if they cannot provide the services themselves. For example, if a woman is diagnosed with diabetes in a WHP exam at a family planning clinic, she would be referred to a community health center or public primary care clinic for further follow- up and care.
