  • The initial reason for writing Complementary and Alternative Medicine: An Evidence- Based Approach was the need to examine research evidence and claims purported by advocates, clinicians, and researchers of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) regarding its effectiveness. Both of us had previous experience with certain of these therapies since we had worked with American Indians who used alternative spiritual- indigenous medical approaches to health-related problems. Joseph Jacobs, a Mohawk, grew up using many of these healing practices.

  • More than eight in ten Americans between the ages of 16 and 29 read a book in the past year, and six in ten used their local public library. At the youngest end of the spectrum, high schoolers in their late teens (ages 16-17) and college-aged young adults (ages 18-24) are especially likely to have read a book or used the library in the past 12 months. And although their library usage patterns may often be influenced by the requirements of school assignments, their interest in the possibilities of mobile technology may also point the way toward opportunities of further...

  • As concerns P, the most common approach is to simply use total population levels. However, as MacKellar et al. (1995) and others have pointed out, it is not a priori clear that only the individual, rather than, say, households or communities, is the relevant demographic unit. To this one can add that a whole range of other demographic factors beyond simple population levels might also impact on emissions.

  • We noted factors such as a habitual face tilt or the presentation of anatomical dissociation (prominent nasal septum iso- lated or combined with small pupillary distance/endophthalmus) when present. There were, however, no clear trends or patterns providing support that anatomi- cal factors significantly contributed to the problem of working with a tilted gaze. Further investigation of the relation- ship between monocular signs and symp- toms, binocular function and ergonomics within the workplace is clearly needed. Others have proposed different variables to be considered.

  • The most recent US crisis appears to fit the more general pattern that the recovery process from severe financial crisis is more protracted than from a normal recession or from milder forms of financial distress. There is certainly little evidence to suggest that this time was worse. Of course this does not mean policy is irrelevant. Quite the contrary, in the heat of the recent financial crisis, there was almost certainly a palpable risk of a Second Great Depression.

  • The major 2S albumin allergen from Brazil nuts, Ber e 1, was subjected to gastrointestinal digestion using a physiologically relevantin vitro model sys-tem either before or after heating (100 C for 20 min). Whilst the albumin was cleaved into peptides, these were held together in a much larger struc-ture even when digested by using a simulated phase 1 (gastric) followed by a phase 2 (duodenal) digestion system. Neither prior heating of Ber e 1 nor the presence of the physiological surfactant phosphatidylcholine affected the pattern of proteolysis.
