This second edition of Plant Drug Analysis includes more than 200 updated color photographs of superb quality demonstrating chromatograms of all relevant standard drugs.
All drugs presented meet the standard of the official pharmacopoeia and originate from well-defined botanical sources. With this guide the technique of thin layer chromatography can be easily used without previous pharmacognostic training. Only commercially available equipment and reagents are needed, the sources as well as all practical details are given. ...
I came to herbal medicine as many of us do: I became ill, and modern medicine could not help me. I felt
betrayed. I was shocked, then angry. Then I began to think about a great many things in new ways.
Because I was raised in a family of powerful political physicians, I was raised with the belief that after
millennia, man (and modern medical science) had defeated disease. I was taught to believe that we were all on
the threshold of everlasting, disease-free life. It was a tremendous shock, then, when reality took me aside and
whispered in my ear. That murmured secret was...
Sales of herbal products have increased dramatically over the past five years. Unfortunately, the
knowledge base devoted to the adverse effects of these products has not grown in proportion to their
increased usage. Data of questionable accuracy, often designed to sell products rather than to provide
objective information, can be found in the print and electronic media, most notably on the Internet.
Even in medical journals, misleading information about the beneficial and adverse effects of herbs can
Alternative medicine is recognized as medical products and practices that do not belong to
the standard cares taken by medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy and allied health professionals.
Alternative medicine includes the mind-body interventions (i.e., meditation, yoga,
acupuncture, deep-breathing exercises, guided imageryAny of various techniques (such as a
series of verbal suggestions) used to guide another person or oneself in imagining sensations—
especially in visualizing an image in the mind—to bring about a desired physical response
(such as stress reduction).
This book "New Insights into Toxicity and Drug Testing" covers all emerging technologies (profiling technologies, 3D cultures, next generation sequencing etc.), available methods and models to evaluate candidate drugs and medicinal plants with reference to toxicity, drug testing and development. This book is an original contribution of experts from different parts of the globe and the in-depth information will be a significant resource for scientists and physicians who are directly dealing with drugs / medicines and human life....
(BQ) Nearly two decades after the first Drug Eruptions & Reactions Manual was compiled by Dr. Litt, this classic work has been developed and expanded into Litt’s D.E.R.M. Relied upon by dermatologists and medical practitioners internationally for its unparalleled practical focus on adverse effects and cutaneous reactions, this text is the essential quick-reference tool for patient care and drug safety.
Herbs and traditional medicines are being extensively used for healthcare in
almost all the countries since times immemorial. Ancient religious texts are replete
with references on the use of natural products with medicinal properties. Because of
local beliefs and practices and also from cost considerations herbal medicines remain
a popular mode of treatment in the developing countries. Even in the industrialised
society the rising cost of prescription drugs and ensuing side effects of the treatment
make it highly attractive to use the traditional medicine particularly for minor ailments....
Bacteria are non-chlorophyllated unicellular organisms that reproduce by fission and do not
present nuclear envelope. Gram´s stain is a staining technique used to classify bacteria based
on the different characteristic of their cell walls. Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria
are determined by the amount and location of peptidoglycan in the cell wall, exhibiting
different chemical compositions and structures, cell-wall permeabilities, physiologies,
metabolisms, and pathogenicities.
Antibiotic agents have been in widespread and largely effective therapeutic use since their
discovery in the 20th century. However, the emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens now presents
an increasing global challenge to both human and veterinary medicine. It is now widely acknowledged
that there is a need to develop novel antimicrobial agents to minimize the threat of further antimicrobial
The history, culture and community values of East Africans are embedded in agriculture. It is the most
important source of livelihoods for millions of East Africans. The sustainable management of the
agriculture production process is therefore crucial if livelihoods are to be sustained.
Organic agriculture is a holistic production management system, which promotes and enhances agro-
ecosystem health, including bio-diversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity.
In most cohort studies it is necessary to calculate the actual time-at-risk for each individual
as person-time. The person-time is used to either calculate mortality or incidence rates of the
cohort or to perform indirect standardization or multivariate analysis.
Person-time was calculated in person-years (PY) by a SAS® macro. The macro uses the
three time variables of age, length of stay in Germany and calendar-year. The macro
calculates and distributes the person-years exactly to the day. Age and length of stay are
categorized in one year intervals.

When I began research for the Nutrition Almanac in the early seventies, scientific information on health
and nutrition was scarce and difficult to find. In recent years, however, there has been a plethora of studies
and most are easier to access. The database of the National Library of Medicine, for example, lists
over 40,000 articles specifically on alternative medicine.
Alternative therapies focus on the underlying cause.

Because competition can improve quality and
drive down costs, governments should foster com-
petition and diversity in the supply of health ser-
vices and inputs, particularly drugs, supplies, and
equipment. This could include, where feasible,
private supply of health care services paid for by
governments or social insurance.
It is expected that the prescription of drugs and treatments tailored for the right patient at the right time
will increase the efficiency of healthcare delivery and reduce healthcare costs. Applied healthcare studies
will be required to obtain evidence for this assumption so that those who reimburse healthcare costs can
incentivise the introduction of personalised drug prescription.
Epidemiology Patients receive, on average, 10 different drugs during each hospitalization. The sicker the patient, the more drugs are given, and there is a corresponding increase in the likelihood of adverse drug reactions. When 15 drugs are given, the probability is 40%. Retrospective analyses of ambulatory patients have revealed adverse drug effects in 20%.
Abbreviations: LSD, lysergic acid diethylamide; GHB, γ-hydroxybutyrate; PCP, phencyclidine; CNS, central nervous systemPrescribed, over-the-counter, and herbal medications are common precipitants of delirium. Drugs with anticholinergic properties, narcotics, and benzodiazepines are especially frequent offenders, but nearly any compound can lead to cognitive dysfunction in a predisposed patient.
A complete medical history is perhaps the single most important part of the evaluation of the patient with unexplained jaundice. Important considerations include the use of or exposure to any chemical or medication, either physicianprescribed, over-the-counter, complementary or alternative medicines such as herbal and vitamin preparations, or other drugs such as anabolic steroids. The patient should be carefully questioned about possible parenteral exposures, including transfusions, IV and intranasal drug use, tattoos, and sexual activity. ...
