Physical Phenomena at High Magnetic Fields-IV (PPHMF-IV) was the fourth
conference sponsored by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL).
The previous conferences were held in May, 1991, 1995, and 1998. These meetings
brought together experts in scientific research areas where high magnetic fields
could make an important impact.
PPHMF-III devoted substantial time to reviewing the state of many fields in
regard to the role of high magnetic fields, such as semiconductors, heavy fermions,
superconductivity, and molecular conductors.
The nation’s six synchrotron light sources, five neutron sources, and highfield
magnet laboratory are uniquely valuable resources that contribute to the
development of new products and processes, create jobs, enhance the skill level
of the U.S. scientific community, and increase U.S. competitiveness. Because of
the high cost of building and operating these facilities,1 only a limited number
can be funded and they must be made widely available.
Since its first implementation by Lauterbur , Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) has become an important noninvasive imaging
modality. MRI has found a number of applications in the fields of
biology, engineering, and material science. Because it provides unique
contrast between soft tissues (which is generally superior to that of
CT) and high spatial resolution, MRI has revolutionized diagnostic
imaging in medical science. An important advantage of diagnostic MRI
as compared to CT is that the former does not use ionizing radiation....
Since the advent of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, systems with amagnetic field
intensity of 1.5 tesla (T) have been deemed the gold standard for different clinical applications
in all body areas. Ongoing advances in hardware and software have made
theseMRsystems increasingly compact, powerful and versatile, leading to the development
of higher magnetic field strength MRsystems (3.0 T) for use in clinical practice

In Design of high density transformers for high frequency high power converters, the abovementioned issues of high-frequency transformers are explored, particularly in regards to high-power converter applications. Loss calculations accommodating resonant operating waveform and Litz wire windings are explored. Leakage inductance modeling for large-number-of-stand Litz wire windings is proposed. The optimal design procedure based on the models is developed.
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a technique where the electron-beam is
transmitted through an ultra-thin specimen, interacting with specimen as it passes
through it. An image is formed from the interaction of the electrons transmitted
through the specimen, which is then magnified and focused onto an imaging device,
such as a fluorescent screen, a photographic film, or a charge-coupled device (CCD)
sensor. This technique is capable of imaging at significantly high resolution than the

The term magnetic bearing refers to devices that provide stable suspension of a rotor. Because
of the contact-less motion of the rotor, magnetic bearings offer many advantages for various
applications. Commercial applications include compressors, centrifuges, high-speed turbines,

This book evolved from the first term of a two-term course on the physics of charged particle
acceleration that I taught at the University of New Mexico and at Los Alamos National
Laboratory. The first term covered conventional accelerators in the single particle limit. The
second term covered collective effects in charged particle beams, including high current
transport and instabilities. The material was selected to make the course accessible to graduate
students in physics and electrical engineering with no previous background in accelerator theory.
The Congressional Budget Office consistently concludes that
infrastructure and other state spending provide considerable
boosts to the economy, while income tax changes for high-
income households have minimal impact on short-term
economic activity. Tax cuts for affluent households result
in small increases in spending, and tax hikes result in only
small decreases. Low- and middle-income households, on
the other hand, have little savings, and reductions in their
after-tax income result in equivalent reductions in spending.
