  • Pacific country populations remain highly vulnerable to HIV infection due to, small highly mobile populations, high rates of STIs and high rates of at risk sexual behaviour. There have been approximately 30,000 reported cases of people living with HIV in the Pacific, but this figure is under-representative due to limited surveillance capacity across the region. Notably, cases from Papua New Guinea make up a significant majority of the total cases detected in the Pacific—from 21% in 1989 to over 99% in 2008.

  • The most notable aspect of the results from the Woodcock data collected in fourth grade (Table 3-2) is that, for the English-language results, there are minimal differences between the high-comprehending Spanish- and English-instructed children. However, when one examines these children’s Spanish-language test results, the differences are marked.

  • In 2002, an estimated 250,000 healthcare-associated pneumonias developed in U.S. hospitals and 36,000 of these were associated with deaths.1 Patients with mechanically-assisted ventilation have a high risk of developing healthcare-associated pneumonia. For the year 2011, NHSN facilities reported more than 3,525 VAPs and the incidence for various types of hospital units ranged from 0.0-4.9 per 1,000 ventilator days.2 Prevention and control of healthcare-associated pneumonia is discussed in the CDC/HICPAC document, Guidelines for Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Pneumonia, 20033.

  • This property is required because the empirically observed densities of returns contrast with the Gaussian model [see Pagan 1996]. This rejection results from two stylised facts. First, large price changes appear more frequently than the normal density would lead to expect. Second, there are indications of significant asymmetry in stock returns. In other words, negative and positive price changes do not have the same probability. These two stylised facts are also apparent in implied volatilities.

  • Intra-partum, post-natal and neonatal cares have the potential to save 20-40% of newborn lives. However to date, post-natal care for mothers and newborns has received relatively little emphasis in public health programmes in Bangladesh, with only a tiny minority of mothers and babies in high-mortality settings receiving post-natal care. Care at birth and in the first days of life not only saves the lives of mothers and newborns, but also reduces serious complications that may have long- term effect.

  • Some analysts have wondered why uninsured people would purchase health insurance as the result of a mandate (Cassidy, 2010; Kling, 2010). After all, for many people the penalty would cost less (at least in the very short-term) than a policy. Health insurance mandates differ from some other requirements, such as the requirement to pay taxes: In exchange for compliance, enrollees individually receive a tangible good—health insurance—that they value. Health economics provides a framework for considering how changes in the price of health insurance affect coverage.

  • Given that the adverse affects of climate change on agriculture are expected to burden poor countries disproportionately, and their rural poor in particular, Bolivia is especially vulnerable as it is the poorest country in South America with at least 70% of the rural population living in poverty and more than a third of rural Bolivians living in extreme poverty. Those citizens who have been displaced by natural disasters in rural areas often remain at risk in urban areas as shantytowns and slums are frequently situated on land prone to flooding or landslide.

  • Securities firm balance sheets primarily reflect securities portfolios and securities financing arrangements. For example, the stylised balance sheet included in Annex 2 suggests that the majority of assets for securities firms are fully collateralized receivables arising from securities borrowed and reverse repurchase transactions with other non-retail market participants. The next greatest asset category is securities owned by the firm at fair value, which includes positions related to derivative transactions.

  • Previous interventions had been aimed at mothers of children, using participation in the WIC program as a channel for communication. The formative research and conversations with the African American community suggested that grandmothers were more frequently the chitterlings preparers and would serve as role models to younger women. Thus, the primary target audience was women who prepare chitterlings — older, African American women who, as grandmothers, are often also caregivers for infants.

The servomotor stops usually must be adjusted to absorb part of the excess force of the full working pressure. Also the servomotor stops must be adjusted so that each servomotor applies the same amount of squeeze at the end of the stroke to prevent distortion of the operating ring and headcover.

  • Recognising that significant levels of investment are required to make the transition to a low carbon economy, the Capital Markets Climate Initiative (CMCI) was launched by the UK Minister of State for Climate Change, Gregory Barker, to help accelerate the response to this financing challenge by supporting the scale up of private finance flows to developing countries. The CMCI will be working with policymakers in developing countries to understand why and how public sector action can help mobilise private capital and encourage new markets in low carbon investments.

  • The economy continues to undergo structural change as it shifts from being dominated by the agricultural sector. The shares of the service and industry sector in real GDP have increased over the last three decades, whereas agriculture accounts for little more than 10% today compared to 25% in the mid-1970s. Because of the widely diverging labour productivities in the different sectors and significant employment of unpaid family workers in agriculture these changes are not fully reflected in the sectors’ shares in employment.

  • To represent the specific behaviors of this reflection, a schematic model was sought that simultaneously covered health promotion and the Health Policy for the Elderly, with a view to adopting actions for greater awareness, resulting in attitudes of empowerment and suggestions for gerontogeriatric nursing actions. Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model(10) was used. Through a chart, it manages to represent the behaviors that can lead to health promotion. Nola Pender’s Model was developed in the United States in the 1980s, but was little explored in Brazil.

  • We posit that the Russian fiscal system presents noteworthy shortcomings relative to the Chinese system. These include lack of transparency in the capture of energy revenues, lack of integration of fiscal expenditures into a unified Treasury system, and massive implicit subsidies in relationships between producers and both national and sub- national governments. Further, we argue that, at least in the rapidly-growing coastal provinces of China, the public sector in China is moving more rapidly than in Russia toward a greater orientation to growth-supporting activities.
