  • We recognize that the creative, effective solutions that positively transform societies and their health ultimately grow from processes that take place within those societies. In both child health and maternal health there are powerful stories of true success, which tell us that change is possible, that the MDGs need not be pie-in-the-sky, and that leaders of change speak many languages. At the same time, we are keenly aware that global forces both constrain and facilitate the ability of local and national actors to think and act boldly.

  • Learning how to write a coherent, effective text is a difficult and protracted achievement of cognitive development that contrasts sharply with the acquisition of speech. By the age of 5, spoken language is normally highly developed with a working vocabulary of several thousand words and an ability to comprehend and produce grammatical sentences. Although the specific contribution of a genetic predisposition for language learning is unsettled, it is apparent that speech acquisition is a natural part of early human development.

  • The emission factors of the 14 most abundant VOCs on sequential cold weather sampling dates (January 17 and March 12, 2003) are compared in Table 4. Indoor and outdoor temperatures and percent RHs were approximately equivalent between these dates (Table 1). However, the January air change rate was 0.58 h-1 versus 0.31 h-1 in March, likely due to the difference in wind conditions. Within both the aldehyde and the terpene hydrocarbon chemical classes, the ratio of the emission factor at the lower air change rate to the emission factor at the higher air change rate was near...

  • Following an FSA visit, this firm proactively took steps to improve its sales process and to source a PPI product that would better suit the needs of its customers. In the past, it had only offered its customers single-premium PPI policies that were provided by the lenders and were therefore specifically linked to the underlying credit product. The firm decided that single-premium PPI was not the best PPI product for its customer base.

  • Similarly, the overall net attendance ratio at the secondary level, that is, the percentage of the secondary school age population (11-15 years) attending secondary school, also increased from 22 percent to 47 percent during the same ten-year period (Figure 2.6). The results also indicate that the percentage increment in net attendance ratio for primary level as well as secondary level was higher for girls than boys. Despite such progress, more than half (53 percent) of children eligible for secondary level schooling were not attending school.

  • Wireless communications offer organizations and users many benefits such as portability and flexibility, increased productivity, and lower installation costs. Wireless technologies cover a broad range of differing capabilities oriented toward different uses and needs. Wireless local area network (WLAN) devices, for instance, allow users to move their laptops from place to place within their offices without the need for wires and without losing network connectivity. Less wiring means greater flexibility, increased efficiency, and reduced wiring costs.

  • The audit of operating systems is a complex and time consuming area. In some instances, software is available to assist in this process, such as CA-Examine for MVS. The basic objective of the computer auditor is to ensure that the security and integrity of the operating system has not been compromised. The auditor should consider whether responsibility for the maintenance of the operating system has been established and that suitable procedures have been documented.

  • The Internet as a research vehicle presents both opportunities and challenges for psychological research. In 1985, only 8.2% of US households had a personal computer, and the Internet as we now know it, with its rich array of communication, information, entertainment, and commercial services, did not exist. Since then, this exotic technology has become domesticated and is now used by the majority of Americans for personal and economic reasons (Cummings & Kraut, 2002).

  • In most cases the resources (financial, human, and others) required for addressing all identified water quality problems significantly exceed the resources allocated to the water pollution control sector. Priorities, therefore, need to be assigned to all problems in order to concentrate the available resources on solving the most urgent and important problems. If this is not done the effect may be an uncoordinated and scattered management effort, resulting in a waste of scarce resources on less important problems.

  • Recent policy attention and research have focused on children's school commuting. Concerns include children's health and safety, traffic congestion, environmental impacts of transportation, and parents' time chauffeuring children. Popular responses aim to increase rates of commuting by bicycle and walking (Rosenthal, 2009), but rarely do these initiatives directly account for other policies, such as school choice, that also impact school transportation.

  • The importance of institutional priorities in the admission process is a significant cue for applicants that the school’s needs matter as much in the admissions process as do the applicants’ needs. For example, a school that has committed itself to increasing classroom diversity may pass on an otherwise strong applicant if the applicant comes from a professional background that is already well repre- sented in the entering class. Therefore, it is crucial for applicants to clarify their career goals and identify programs with which they fit best.

  • Integral Signal Represent at ions The integral transform is one of the most important tools in signal theory. The best known example is the Fourier transform, buttherearemany other transforms of interest. In the following, W will first discuss the basic concepts of integral transforms. Then we will study the Fourier, Hartley, and Hilbert transforms. Finally, we will focus on real bandpass processes and their representation by means of their complex envelope.

  • A recent article in this journal, “The child health/family income gradient: Evidence from England” (Alison Currie, Michael A. Shields and Stephen Wheatley Price, 2007) argues that income gradients in the health of English children differ from those observed in either the US or Canada. Using data from the 1997 to 2002 Health Survey for England (HSE), Currie, Shields and Wheatley Price (CSW) conclude that English health gradients in income are small and increase little as children grow older.
