I am delighted to have the opportunity to edit this important issue of Obstetrics and
Gynecology Clinics of North America on the topic of Medical Complications in Pregnancy.
The broad field of medicine changes rapidly, with constantly occurring new
breakthroughs, approaches, and recommendations. The area of medical disorders in
pregnancy encompasses a broad range of diseases; a woman may have a long-term
chronic disorder that can have major implications for undertaking a pregnancy. Yet,
other medical conditions are unique to pregnancy but also influence gestational
Medical Statistics at a Glance is directed at undergraduate
medical students, medical researchers, postgraduates in the
biomedical disciplines and at pharmaceutical industry personnel.
All of these individuals will, at some time in their
professional lives, be faced with quantitative results (their
own or those of others) that will need to be critically
evaluated and interpreted, and some, of course, will have to
pass that dreaded statistics exam! A proper understanding
of statistical concepts and methodology is invaluable for
The medical devices industry is booming. Growth in the industry has not stopped despite
globally fluctuating economies. The main reason for this success is probably the self-sustaining
nature of health care. In essence, the same technology that makes it possible for
people to live longer engenders the need for more health-care technologies to enhance the
quality of an extended lifetime. It comes as no surprise, then, that the demand for trained
medical-device designers has increased tremendously over the past few years.
The negative health impact of many large-scale public health emergencies,
such as an intentional anthrax release, severe acute respiratory
syndrome (SARS), or the recent 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, can be
mitigated significantly by medical countermeasures such as antimicrobials,
antivirals, and vaccines. To be effective, these countermeasures generally
must be delivered in very large quantities in a short period of time.
Primary care clinicians often provide continuity of care, emphasize prevention,
and address chronic illness with their patients. All these endeavors
require the active involvement of the patient in treatment planning and
adherence. An active and healthy therapeutic alliance that recognizes that
patients are the chief consumers of health care is essential in this regard.
This critical role in directing one’s health care can be either facilitated or
complicated by a patient’s emotional, cognitive, and behavioral strengths
or weaknesses (ie, mental health).

The use of the Internet and other digital information technologies by
the scientific, technical, and medical (STM) research community in the
United States and most other countries has transformed many aspects of
the research and publishing process. The new technologies have created
fundamental changes in the production, management, dissemination, and
use of all types of information. It is now possible to communicate research
results much more quickly, broadly, and openly than was possible through
traditional print publications in the past.
(BQ) Part 2 book "How the immune system works" presents the following contents: Secondary lymphoid organs and lymphocyte trafficking, restraining the immune system, self tolerance and MHC restriction, immunological memory, the intestinal immune system, vaccines, the immune system gone wrong, cancer and the immune system, immunodeficiency,...
Follistatin-related protein (FRP)⁄follistatin-like 1 (FSTL1) is a member of the
follistatin protein family, all of which share a characteristic structure unit found
in follistatin, called the FS domain. Developmental studies have suggested that
FRP regulates organ tissue formation in embryos. Immunological studies
showed that FRP modifies joint inflammation in arthritic disease, and modu-lates allograft tolerance.
Autoimmune regulator (AIRE) is a transcriptional regulator involved in
establishing immunological self-tolerance. Mutations in theAIREgene lead
to the development of the autosomal, recessively inherited, organ-specific
autoimmune disease, autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis ectoder-mal dystrophy (APECED).
