  • Today, the term reliability is part of our everyday language, especially when speaking about the functionality of a product. A very reliable product is a product that fulfils its function at all times and under all operating conditions. The technical definition for reliability differs only slightly by expanding this common definition by probability: reliability is the probability that a product does not fail under given functional und environmental conditions during a defined period of time (VDI guidelines 4001).

  • Conservators have many specializations, from paintings to works of art on paper to photography, and more. Those who specialize in outdoor sculpture also have subspecialties (bronze, stone, wood, and so forth). Begin by locating several people whose skills and experience are comparable and appear to match your needs. Professional qualifications are always the most important criterion. Geographic proximity is helpful but not necessary.

  • Nevertheless for both leisure and business markets, perhaps the most important criterion for selecting to visit or not to visit a destination is its image. Image is the set of expectations and perceptions a prospective traveler has of a destination. Past experience of the destination or the companies involved (i.e. airlines, hotels, tour operators); descriptions by friends and relatives; general information; and marketing campaigns develop these expectations and perception which may be true or imaginary representations. (Baloglu and Brinberg, 1997; Chon,1991 and 1992; Chacko, 1997).

  • Research has shown that institutional reputation is the most important criterion in online MBA program selection, with workload and time to complete the next most frequently given reasons (Chiu, 1999). Other research has found convenience (Dunning & Mijayaraman, 2000; Tallent-Runnels, Thomas, Lan & Cooper, 2006) or flexibility in time management to be of greatest importance in choosing online education in general (McEwen, 2001; Moskal & Dziuban, 2001; Ryan, 2001; Smith, 2001).

  • Program correctness guarantees correct results for all valid input. But what happens when the input is invalid? Another important criterion of program reliability is the robustness, which measures how well the program runs under various conditions. In this chapter, we will describe how to code this exception-handling mechanism in Java to improve the program’s robustness.

  • Application of theories of failure for thick walled pressure vessels. Having discussed the stresses in thick walled cylinders it is important to consider their failure criterion. The five failure theories will be considered in this regard and the variation of wall thickness to internal radius ratio t/ri or radius ratio ro/ri with p/σyp for

  • The source of project ideas may come from a variety of sources, most importantly from prospective implementing partners (either partner governments, non-state actors or multi-lateral or regional development agencies). Local ownership of, and commitment to, potential projects is a key quality assessment criterion. Furthermore, project ideas should be drawn from the priorities and targets identified in the relevant Country Strategy Paper and National Indicative Programme.

  • THERE ARE few circumstances among those which make up the present condition of human knowledge, more unlike what might have been expected, or more significant of the backward state in which speculation on the most important subjects still lingers, than the little progress which has been made in the decision of the controversy respecting the criterion of right and wrong.

  • Without descriptive theories to interpret the empirical associations, the value-relevance literature’s associations have limited implications or inferences for standard setting; they are just associations. For example, consider standard-setting inferences based on a theory that assumes standard setters consider a ‘‘high’’ association with stock values a ‘‘desirable’’ attribute for accounting earnings. Those inferences are not likely to be useful if the evidence suggests standard setters do not consider stock value association an important attribute.

  • Ordering information is a difficult but important task for applications generating natural-language text. We present a bottom-up approach to arranging sentences extracted for multi-document summarization. To capture the association and order of two textual segments (eg, sentences), we define four criteria, chronology, topical-closeness, precedence, and succession. These criteria are integrated into a criterion by a supervised learning approach.

  • The expected cost of failure to the economy at large should still be the key criterion for determining which financial firms are regulated and which are not, since this is what drives de facto eligibility for the official safety net, be it deposit insurance, access to the central bank’s liquidity assistance, or use of public funds for recapitalization or nationalization. Size, leverage, and the degree of “entanglement” in financial markets should all be important in making the eligibility decision—more so than how firms classify themselves (as banks, nonbanks, etc).

  • This paper presents a discriminative pruning method of n-gram language model for Chinese word segmentation. To reduce the size of the language model that is used in a Chinese word segmentation system, importance of each bigram is computed in terms of discriminative pruning criterion that is related to the performance loss caused by pruning the bigram. Then we propose a step-by-step growing algorithm to build the language model of desired size.
